People's Paula - will she run?

She's all over the papers but she keeps bleating on about her lack of training, her bad leg and her spider bite

Why oh Why do we keep sending invalids (eg D Beckham) to important events - it should be like the 'Merican system - you run in the trials and if you win you go - otherwise you stay at home and shut up

I think the US Olympic trials system works well for them but I think our system suits us better. Hope she wins btw.

Our system = OMG they might not come last send them!

In fairness we don't anyone within a Olympic mile of her in her event/events do we?

Our system just allows some margin of error. If the best athlete isn't fit for the trials he or she can still go to the games. The system of the US sending the top 3 athletes from the trials works well for them because there's such strength in depth over there.

Guest Stevie

You see enough people pissing in our streets on a Friday night without having to watch it during an Athletic event at the Olympics as well live on TV, so I hope not.

Aye their system is a little harsh at times tbh Tyson Gay is the reigning 200m world champion (and 100m champ) and he injured his hamstring and pulled up some way into the 200m trial so he isn't going to be competing in that event, he's still in the 100m though as he won that trial.

Not really. I reckon Mara Yamauchi could spring a surprise and grab a medal, but more because the potentially difficult conditions will suit her than because she's world-class per se.

Did Michael Johnson once get some sort of dispensation to go as he never competed in the trials? Not that I'm complaining mind as he was one of my idols growing up. An absolute joy to behold. And I know I wasn't the only one who used to try and run like him. :D

I have a feeling that, at some point, he benefited from one of those rules (possibly at the World Championships rather than the Olympics?) where the reigning champion in each event was guaranteed qualification above and beyond the three athletes from each country. Could be completely making that up though.

I remember staying up to watch the Atlanta Olympics (iirc) 200m final where Johnson smashed the world record. Breathtaking.

Same here.

I also remember staying up to see Linford get wrongly disqualified in the 100m final. :D

It was phenomenal. Frankie Fredericks' ran 19.68 and was still nowhere near him. :D

Best sprint race ever was the 100m final in Seoul though.

Best opening ceremony, too. Korean Fried Dove anyone? :D

:) Forgot about that. Hoy another pigeon on the barby.
