If the best athlete isn't fit for the trials he or she can still go to the games. Aye their system is a little harsh at times tbh Tyson Gay is the reigning 200m world champion (and 100m champ) and he injured his hamstring and pulled up some way into the 200m trial so he isn't going to be competing in that event, he's still in the 100m though as he won that trial. I reckon Mara Yamauchi could spring a surprise and grab a medal, but more because the potentially difficult conditions will suit her than because she's world-class per se. Did Michael Johnson once get some sort of dispensation to go as he never competed in the trials? Not that I'm complaining mind as he was one of my idols growing up. An absolute joy to behold. Not that I'm complaining mind as he was one of my idols growing up. An absolute joy to behold. And I know I wasn't the only one who used to try and run like him. I have a feeling that, at some point, he benefited from one of those rules (possibly at the World Championships rather than the Olympics?) where the reigning champion in each event was guaranteed qualification above and beyond the three athletes from each country.
