I'm Oba The Toon To Be At United Says Striker

By Craig Hope

NIGERIAN hotshot Oba Martins has pledged his future to Newcastle United and says that he wants to do all he can to help the club get back into Europe.

The 23-year-old has been the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal during the summer with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said to be a long-time admirer of the former Inter ace.

And it's easy to see why given Martins' return of 27 goals in two seasons since joining the Magpies from the Italian giants in a £10m deal in August, 2006.

The Toon No.9 has always been something of a favourite among the Gallowgate faithful, be it their love of his spectacular goals or equally impressive somersault celebration.

And it is that bond with the Geordie fans which Martins cites as one of the main reasons behind his desire to remain on Tyneside.

"It is good to know where I am going to be because I am still a Newcastle player and I really want to play for Newcastle," Martins told Sky Sports News.

"I really love the fans as well and I have three years on my contract so for now I really don't know what is going on.

"There is talk about Arsenal, which is a good thing because they play in the UEFA Champions League, but for now I am a Newcastle player and I will stay here for three years.

"I am happy, very happy. I still have three more years left and I really want to play for Newcastle. I want to my best to help them into Europe."

This Martins staying at Toon stories are running at the frequency of one a week, time to rehash the Given staying, Zog staying alternatives?

Ashley selling up has to be next.

As Radgi would say, Isegrim is spitting bricks about now.

:D

Not too fussed to be honest. I think there are better players around, but he's ok unless we actually sign one of these better players. I'd love to see him sold just to witness the suicidal meltdown over at N-O though...

Given our recent transfer success [/sarcasm], I think it would be a massive blow to loose Martins. He might not be to everyone's liking, but whether we could replace him with equal or better is the question.
