Well he didn't but he should have

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has added his voice to the dismay over Sepp Blatter's controversial slavery comments.

The Fifa president caused widespread controversy when he likened transfer negotiations surrounding footballers to 'modern slavery' when discussing the Cristiano Ronaldo saga.

O'Neill has expressed his shock at the comments and believes that contracts should be honoured.

He told Sky Sports News: "I think it was pretty poor fare really because if the quotes attributed to him were that Ronaldo should be allowed to leave if he wants to, well it's quite incredible really.

"So a contract's not worth anything? Well, we kind of know that anyway in a sort of cynical manner.

"But I've never seen too many players coming in with serious injuries and facing a long lay-off and saying: 'I know, I think that because I won't be playing any football now for you for the foreseeable future, you should really tear my contract up and not pay me until I get fit again'.

"So it is an amazing comment coming from Mr Blatter, really amazing because, despite what he says, contracts are there, they are drawn up in the first place so that you hope that people would abide with them and, yes it has got serious connotations. I must admit it's a pretty bold statement and one that wouldn't have gone down too well certainly at club level when you are trying to hold onto your players."

Intertoto Cup

Meanwhile Villa are set to face Danish outfit Odense BK in the third and final round of the Intertoto Cup.

Odense beat Finnish side TPS Turku 2-0 at home on Sunday to win 4-1 on aggregate to set up the clash.

The first leg will be played in Denmark next weekend, with the return at Villa the following weekend, with the winners going into the Uefa Cup's second qualifying round.

Odense coach Lars Olsen, who captained Denmark to their Euro 92 triumph, is relishing the challenge.

He told the club's official website: "We had the chance to score more than two goals against TPS, but I'm really pleased.

"We now have to build on that. We like to be in possession of the ball but this time we'll be the underdogs. We won't get as many chances so we have to score with the chances we do get.

"We'll have to see. They're an English Premier League team but why can't we take them by surprise?"
