Jimbo 175
Michael Owen's advisers will re-open talks with Newcastle at the start of next week aimed at extending his current deal, but with the club insisting on the proviso that he takes a pay cut. Owen's £110,000-a-week deal has 12 months left and there is growing concern at St James' Park that he will negotiate a move for nothing in January. The 28-year-old's representatives have, surprisingly, been invited for only one round of talks with Newcastle officials. Michael Owen They were told that Owen's new offer, in line with an across-the-board reduction in player salaries, would be around £80,000-a-week. To help offset the cut in pay, Owen will be offered potential bonuses to bring his new package closer to his current deal. Owner Mike Ashley wants a huge reduction in the wage bill, which has six players on more than £3million a year, and is keen that Owen leads the way by agreeing to take less. If Owen turns down Newcastle's offer, he will be allowed to leave for around £5m, with Manchester United monitoring the situation.
Kid Dynamite 7318
good, he doesnt do nearly enough to justify £110k a week.
adam_cann 0
owen isn't worth that, but why not get smith and ameobi off the wage bill before lowering owen's wages
Matt 0
If Crouch, with 1 year on his contract, can go for £9m+add ons then I think Owen would be fetching more than £5m.
Torres 0
Owen is crocked though which makes him a risky purchase. Still the best striker you have when fit.
adam_cann 0
yep, by a country mile, the 20 games he put together at the end of last season was the difference between a relegation battle and mid-table mediocrity
manc-mag 1
Six players on more than £3 million a year and look at us. Jesus wept, what an utterly mis-managed club. Wield the fucking axe, Ashley with my blessing.

Wield the fucking axe, Ashley with my blessing. Couldn't agree more. The wage bill was and still is crippling the club. It will take quite a while to rectify, something the squealers don't want to accept.
Jusoda Kid 1
What the fuck is he doing on 110k a week, he can have no complaints imo and what other club in their right minds would pay him anywhere near that? When I think about it now FS wants shot with shit, businessman my arse. Real wee wanting rid, there were no takers and us daft cunts offer him that kind of money, what a fucking shambles we were. David Kelly 1280
The comments on his wage are fair enough but we have precious little quality in the team to begin with. To lose him and replace him of players of Gutheries standard and wage would cement our position as poxy little club that has no prospects of ever winning anything again. At least then we would be saved from the likes of Torres coming on here because no other teams fans would give a fuck about us any more.

Aye, and I can't see us replacing him with anything close, plus he'll help attract players indirectly as well. Keeping Owen isn't the be all and end all, but if we lose him it will send out a bit of a negative message.
The Fish 11080
As it's all the same, it's not whether Michael Owen's contribution on the pitch is worth over £100k a week, it's his value to the team. We won't get close to a player of his calibre unless we pay over the odds for it.
