I R Toon Fan 0
why does it matter so much? he'll only be a squad player and if he's there to add depth to the side his signing can't be too bad a thing to happen. we don't want squad players, we want players to improve the first team. Woopey fuckin do since when was guthrie signed instead of a player to improve the first team? fact has it we need players as our squad is so thin. maybe we can judge keegan's aspirations on september 1st and also judge guthrie after he's actually been given a chance to prove himself... we bought loads of squad players last summer, surely we don't need more squad players ? 13 players training on Monday... Your right.

Torres 0
3.5 million would be a great bit of business by Rafa ... I think it is probably closer to 1 million though. Played some good games for the reserves but never really impressed.

Your right. Were you there or do you just believe the shit the papers print? Thats 13 first teamers, there are another 10-15 fringe and reserve players who will be given a squad number too who will be in training
Ayatollah Hermione 14043
15 fringe players, you say? Well, fuck the rest of the window, we have some fringe players to warm our bench. Up the Premier League, indeed. I'm not sure you can put a positive spin on 13 first teamers tbh. Granted, one of them is in prison and the other is off in South America but 15? Aye, we don't need depth.
khay 10
don't know if its been mentioned all ready in the thread but we get 7 subs next season as well, so we need a bigger squad for that.
David Kelly 1260
Yes we need more of a squad but to my mind the best way of doing this would be to buy some first team players and then let last seasons first team fill out the squad. Our midfield was poor last season and buying more of a similar or worse standard doesn't help matters. I hope I'm wrong and the lad turns into a quality player but this doesn't look like a signing that's going to get us back to the show to me. The Fish 10963
Could this be a squad player to plug the gap left by Barton in the short term? Sort of cover for Butt? Actually that's a point, who've we got in the centre of midfield? Butt, Geremi.... Smith... maybe? The Zog and Milner can play there, but they're not central midfielders, they're attacking midfielders who (if given license by a holding player) can attack through the middle. Given/Harper Beye Faye Taylor Enrique Guitierrez Butt/Guthrie/Smith/Geremi Zog/Milner Owen Viduka Martins That midfield does not make me weak at the knees... in fact the team's not exciting me much at the minute. Hopefully we'll have another signing next week that's a little more stirring.
Happy Face 29
What's his number? I'm getting it on my shirt with 'Woody' above it. And people were worried we wouldn't be able to sign top 4 rejects who'd accomodate the new wage structure. Cynics.

ohhh_yeah 2991
Guthrie: My joy at joining the Toon UNITED new boy Danny Guthrie today revealed he cannot wait to play for Kevin Keegan after already experiencing the full impact of the Magpies’ boss last season. Guthrie, whose transfer to Newcastle was revealed yesterday in the Chronicle’s later editions, was in the Bolton side that held United to a 0-0 stalemate in Keegan’s first game back in charge. The atmosphere inside St James’s Park that day made a huge impression on the 21-year-old Guthrie. And after signing a four-year deal with United, Guthrie says he cannot wait to pull on the black-and-white shirt and play for the Toon Army. He told the Chronicle: “I remember the atmosphere in that game in January being amazing. “It was a really special occasion for the Newcastle United fans because Kevin Keegan was back as manager. The fans were just unbelievable. “Kevin is a legend and it is going to be very exciting for me to see what I can learn from him.” Guthrie made 25 appearances for the Trotters last term as he helped guide the Reebok Stadium club to safety while on loan from Liverpool. He didn’t net in the Premier League, but smashed home a wonderful volley for Bolton at Fulham on his debut at Craven Cottage in the 2-1 win in the Carling Cup. And speaking on his experiences with Gary Megson’s side, Guthrie added: “I learned a lot playing in the Premier League for Bolton last season and I expect more from myself next season. “I cannot wait to get started. I just want to do well for Newcastle.”

Not because of his court appearances, we knew this, but he hasn't came up to expectations. So I would rather replace him with someone better and get shot of him. Unless Keegan thinks he can get more, but he's been a huge disappointment.
The Fish 10963
Don't get me wrong Leazes, I'm not a fan of Barton myself. On and off the pitch he's been a big disappointment for me, I'd like to see us pick up an improvement rather than a stop gap. But If Keegan intends to keep him despite his off the field antics I'd assume Guthrie has been bought to add depth to a pretty flimsy midfield. Jusoda Kid 1
Getting rid of Barton is lose. lose situation for me, we might as well keep him, he was starting to play better towards the end of last season so lets hope he can pick up where he left off. I know where you're coming from Wacky, but he's going to miss the majority of pre-season, he's not a star player and he's not exactly a "team player" now is he? I've run out of reasons to keep him. It being expensive to replace him isn't enough of a reason for me anymore. (not saying that's your reasoning, it's just the argument that's been levelled at me the most)
Park Life 71
Really have no idea how good he is or whether he will improve. Looks to me like a squad player with potential type of signing. Edited July 13, 2008 by Park Life
