Barton: No early release

Joey Barton will not be released early with an electronic tag and must serve up to another month in jail, according to reports.

The midfielder and his club Newcastle had hoped he would be freed early next week under the condition he wore a tag which would force him to observe a curfew.

But the former Manchester City player has been deemed not to fit the right criteria for early release given the nature of his crime and the fact he committed his last offence while on bail.

Barton will now remain behind bars in Manchester's Strangeways jail and can be expect to be released in early August, just days before the start of the new Premier League season.

The Huyton-born footballer pleaded guilty to assault and affray at Liverpool Crown Court after being caught on CCTV attacking a man to the ground in Liverpool city centre last December.

Dabo

He was on bail over his training ground assault on former City team-mate Ousmane Dabo when he got involved in the fight outside a McDonald's restaurant in Liverpool city centre last December.

He was jailed for six months on 20th May, but it was thought he would only serve one third, or eight weeks and be released early, around 15th July.

But probation and prison officials, in line with Ministry of Justice guidelines, have now ruled Barton was not suitable to be released early.

The Ministry of Justice would not comment on the terms of the player's release, however sources confirmed he was denied a tag and must now serve another four weeks in jail.

Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin was fined £2,000 on Monday for failing to attend the aborted assault trial of former team-mate Joey Barton.

The Frenchman was warned he could have faced a jail term if his absence had led to a delay in court proceedings.

Distin, 30, ignored a hand-delivered summons to appear in court and flew to Crete for a holiday with his family days before the hearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on June 30.

Distin was required to give verbal evidence after witnessing the training ground bust-up at Manchester City last May in which Barton attacked Ousmane Dabo.

Judge Mushtaq Khokhar told Distin his non-appearance would have halted the case if Barton had not changed his plea to guilty and a custodial sentence could have followed.

Sure he can afford it now :icon_lol:
