Happy Face 29
Stabbed boys had planned speeches Two London teenagers who were stabbed to death ten days apart had prepared speeches on knife crime for a public speaking challenge. David Idowu, 14, and Ben Kinsella, 16, were coached by Speakers Bank, which trains teenagers on public speaking. David was stabbed two days before his speech and died three weeks later in hospital. A friend took his place on the podium. Ben was a reserve speaker last year. He was stabbed to death on 29 June Although Ben and David never met, they were coached by the same trainer, who was now in "deep deep shock" at the boys' deaths, Jez Sweetland, Chief Executive of Speakers Bank said. Teenagers feel 'victimised' Since January this year 19 teenagers have been killed violently in London. About 30% of the 20,000 young people from London and Essex trained by Speakers Bank, chose to speak on consequences of knife crime and the stereotyping of youth. The project, funded by Jack Petchey Foundation, trains teenagers from state schools on communication, body language and public speaking. Mr Sweetland said both boys decided to speak on knife crime and its consequences and wanted young people to be part of the solution. David, from Southwark, was trained by Speakers Bank a few weeks before he was stabbed in Great Dover Street, Borough, on 19 June. Following the stabbing, David's best friend took his place at the competition. "It shows a great courage, anger and tears that teenagers feel on the issue of knife crime," Mr Sweetland said. Ben, from Islington in north London, who was stabbed during a row in York Way, Holloway, was trained by the project last year. Earlier his family said he had written a moving speech on the consequences of knife crime. "More and more the media focuses on teenagers being hoodies and crime and this makes young people feel victimised. "A majority of teenagers are fed-up with being stereotyped and want to be part of a solution," Mr Sweetland said. Are they suggesting it's a motive or just a horrible coincidence. It's fucked up either way. Me and a mate were taking the piss over the weekend because Scotland Yard have changed their priority from terrorism to knife attacks (two crimes that 99% of people will never fall victim to) but something needs to happen. Douggy B 0
There was a gang of kids on the tube opposite me this afternoon rapping about knives and stabbing people. I wanted to give them a slap but funnily enough I refrained.

W.L 0
They should put any of these daft little cunts caught carrying a knife in a cage in a local pub somewhere, then charge the drinkers £5 a go to kick them into a coma. It would be a good way for people to get their aggression out instead of starting fights with any cunt outside at closing, and might kill off a few of the knife carriers too. The Fish 11098
stabbings may have gone up, but shootings have gone down. It's just that it's flavour of the month. It's not about the implement, it's the figures for attacks themselves I'd be interested in seeing. Who cares if it's a knife, a gun or a rubber chicken attack. Better parenting, better scholing and better policing is needed, not buzz words and rhetoric Edit. I typoed schooling, but felt it too funny to remove Edited July 8, 2008 by The Fish

Doesn't turn them into murderers. When i was a kid, we sometimes used sticks as replica guns, slightly different to an absorbing 3-dimensional interface with high definition graphical realisation of every aggression your parents have taught you. Seriously (it obviously isnt the only cause) its obvious that media (video games, movies, tv) has an influence as the 14 year olds who are stabbing other kids refer to 'gangsta' culture and use it as a reference point with respect to the violence. How do you think they learnt about such things and which media are they using the most? Its worth bearing in mind at least.
The Fish 11098
there can be absolutely no doubt that computer games like GTA would have a dramatic and lasting effect on a child's blossoming psyche. However, these games have an 18 certificate. If the parents are letting the kids play the game, it's the parents responsibility to make sure the child knows the difference between mugging a hooker in a game and real life. This is not a case of the entertainment industry letting down today's youths, that finger points solely at the parents.

When I was young, rival punk gangs would go down the fairground at easter with knives and bats and beat the everloving shit out of each other. Years before that the mods and rockers were at each others throats. When my dad was young the Teddy Boys kicked off the 1958 Notting Hill riots. Hells angels have killed many people and injured far more while adopting an image associated with Heavy Metal. "Gangsta" culture is just the current way to attribute youth violence to the must popular music of the time..Hip-Hop. You don't need to learn to be violent, it's innate, we're hunter gatherers. You need diversions for kids to stop them stabbing each other out of pure boredom. Like GTA4 or Brighton Rock provide.
