Newcastle United have reportedly held informal discussions with American investors over the sale of the club.

Reports in Friday's press claim representatives of owner Mike Ashley have met counterparts from New York-based private equity fund InterMedia Partners.

It has also been suggested that Ashley stated he would be willing to sell for a fee of £420million - around £286million more than he paid for the club last summer.

Newcastle have yet to comment on the speculation, however fresh reports emanating from America have claimed that the US company did make an approach to hold initial talks.

Furthermore, Sky Sports News understands the initial discussion between InterMedia Partners and Newcastle took place through a third party

I get the feeling this is an Albert Luque situation. Party A comes along and shows interest in the club, Party B isn't particularly keen but being a businessman names a price which would net him a fair amount of wonga, Party B says "Fuck that shit" and goes away.

Only difference in the Albert Luque case he named his price and Fat Fred went "90k? Alreet!" B)

If MA was as keen on selling as the 'papers say he was then he wouldn't have shelled out potentially £12 million on a player only a few days ago and allow us to be in talks with some Swiss midfielder.

I'll be gutted if it's true tbf.

First season in God knows how long where it's not being billed as a "transition" season.

Please Mike, hang about. A bit more money won't make you any happier but becoming a legend to a whole community will. B)

must admit when he started paying off the debt and such i thought he was cleaning us up to sell us on, then the cutting back etc

i dunno i think he'd sell up for that kinda cash (prob to try buy spurs)

but theres nothing in those reports until it's concrete means fck all

do you think anyone thinks we'd be a good buy at 420M though?

The only way he'll get anything like that amount of money for theclub is if we have a season or two of qualifying for UEFA Cup/CL.

People in the press and the world off football in general underestimate Ashley because in the straight laced world of business he's a bit off the wall. Lets not forget this bloke became a billionaire completely off his own back. He's not stupid.

£420 million is an astronomical fee for a club that isn't in winning things but everything has it's price. If that is how much we're worth to Ashley then I personally don't think he's interested in selling.

I don't think we need to worry about any potential takeover in the near future.

And in all honesty if someone paid 420m for us don't you think they'd expect a little more in the playing staff than the rabble we've got because there is no fucking way they'd be spending that wedge and not expecting a competitive club.

Weren't the red scouse being touted around the high 300's?

Thats just it. They approached him and suddenly he wants to sell? He'd be made not to listen but they have already said they baulked at his asking price. Hardly like he is desperate to shift it is it?

I've noticed that too, although it's probably the only picture of him in existence where he isn't grinning like a Cheshire cat.
