Everton have made an official approach to Newcastle for Steve Round as they look for a number two to David Moyes.

Moyes has been working without an assistant manager since the departure of Alan Irvine to Preston in November.

Former Middlesbrough number two Round is thought be Moyes' top target to work alongside him at Goodison Park next season, and Newcastle have given the Merseyside club permission to talk to Round.

The 37-year-old's contract at St James' Park is believed to have expired and no new deal has been agreed, allowing Everton to make a move for his services.

Round only moved to Newcastle last summer when Sam Allardyce appointed him as first team coach at St James' Park and he remained part of the coaching staff under Kevin Keegan.
