Blackburn's Paul Ince enjoys return to big time

Paul Ince, the new Blackburn manager who, as a player, was once branded a "big-time Charlie" by Sir Alex Ferguson, intends to copy the same high standards demanded by the Manchester United manager. One of Ince's first tasks will be persuade prize asset David Bentley to remain at the club - but it is thought to offers of £15 million would be enough to see the midfielder leave.

Ince, 40, was officially unveiled by Blackburn, having only taken his first step on the managerial ladder 20 months ago at Macclesfield Town. His ground-breaking appointment is considered something of a risk yet the former England captain, the first black Briton to manage in the Premier League, hopes the lessons he learned under Ferguson will ensure success.

Ince in charge

Ince spent six years under Ferguson at Old Trafford and although their relationship was sometimes strained, he believes he picked up enough knowledge from the Scot to prove the doubters wrong. "I had a text off him [Ferguson] to say 'well done, congratulations'," said Ince, who has signed a three-year contract after resigning as manager of Milton Keynes Dons, after steering the club to the League Two title.

"What lessons from him will I be taking into this job? The standards he implements in his team and his players. I was privileged to work for Sir Alex because his standards are unbelievable. I've been at other clubs where the standards haven't been as high. I can take that into my managerial career."

Ince's primary concern will be to secure the services of his star players Roque Santa Cruz and David Bentley. Ferguson has been linked with a move Blackburn's £10 million-rated Paraguay forward, while Bentley, the want-away England winger, has already stated his desire to leave the club. Blackburn could, however, be persuaded to part with the £15-million-rated player if one of the big four come knocking.

"If he [Ferguson] comes on asking about Santa Cruz then I'll just tell him he's not having him," Ince said. "There's interest from other clubs but this is my first year in management and you want to keep your best players. Bentley and Santa Cruz are certainly two of those. We'll have a chat when pre-season starts and go from there."

I for one really hope he does a good job. This will be one source of great interest next season.

He's a bellend and they're our rivals. Hope he does a shit job.

YOu know what I mean.

A bit offensive iyam.

Just saying this is a historic moment in English football and a club supporting a young English black manager should be applauded. I'm not hoping he does a mega job, hence the carefully chosen words "good job'. They aren't so far ahead of us that we need to worry too much IMO.

In general I'd like to see more black managers do well but I'm not going to hope a twat like Ince does a good job at one of our rivals just because of the colour of his skin. Historic moment or not.

The fact that he's being so widely lauded as such is a pretty sorry statement, especially given that english (or british) managers are seemingly a dying breed in the Premiership in general.

He should be judged on the job he does, the amount of melanin in his skin tissue should never even come into it.

It makes no difference to me whether he's black or white.

That's what Michael Jackson reckons too.

Or young or old, or necessarily having a human DNA match. Probably harder to fit into a song though.

If you're thinking of being my baby it don't matter if you're black or white.

Not many local managers getting these opportunities, nice to see it happen, hope it's not as succesful as Moyes' Everton appointment like.
