Sorry? :D

When I had the displeasure of conversing with you once before, you were telling me what a high-roller business you were in and that some of the lads at work had new Corsas :rip:

Was that when you were boasting about how much of a "high-roller" you were with your car which was quite a few years older than what some of the 17 year olds at my place were driving?

Doesn't make sense, are you saying your car was worth twice as much as his? Or in reality was it actually worth closer to half? :)

Pretty similar at the time iirc.

So who's was paying more (running costs) at the time? Him, in his brand new 1.0 tin machine with windy windows that he bought so he could be cheap and get 60mpg, or me, in my sports version top-of-the-range model. Hardlys a convincing argument to tell me that you're a cut above me.

Wasn't your car worth about £4,000?

I think (although can't say for sure) his was a 1.4 and did exactly what he needed it to do. He didn't have the super sport turbo rudeboy gangsta aiiigghht model but then he wasn't a little boy racer prick who sticks holes in his exhaust pipe to make the car sound meatier.

Crash and burn on an argument and you move onto the next person, eh? :D

Crash and burn how?

I had an argument about spoilers that I was clearly right on, in which some cyber-geeks are trying and failing to disprove. My response was just to laugh at you rather than provide a written response :rip:

(p.s. I don't think you've proved anything Thompers, where Fop et al seem to back up their points with the pertinent information)

I sold my car last year and before it went I put my private plate onto retention. I've now lost the retention documents and haven't a clue how or who to ask about replacing them? Anyone clued up?

top end Astra Coupe does 152mph.

You sure yours isn't 'modded' Thompers?? :D

Or are you one of these blokes with a 20" cock too? :rip:

On that subject in all honesty who actually gets to drive a car more than 10 or 20 mph above the posted speed limit now days?

No-one because the chances of getting caught and being hit with a ridiculous fine and a suspended licence are huge.

Even the places where speed limits once were not enforced are changing their ways.

Thompers, a bit of advice (not that you'll take it), if you honestly think you're going drive the Nordschleife in your Astra you really should think again. It's doubtful you have either the knowledge of the track or the ability to be anything other than a danger to you and the other users.

I've been for a ride around it with Ove Andersson (RIP) and it's nothing like being a boy racer around the countryside.

Source?

Your choice of car is a good start.

+ I wouldn't want to go to a race track full of flash bastards and pull up in an astra

It would be like going to your Knighthood ceremony in an Adidas tracksuit top

Arise Sir Jonny2J

Clueless? I think so. Anyone who thinks you need a Porsche for a spoiler to have effect knows nothing.

Anyone who produces offspring as ugly as yours can't comment in a thread containing a car as beautiful as mine so fuck off.

Its an Astra, I dont care if you have the engine off a Hawker Harrier in there it will never be beautiful. :)

Me neither. I just tend to not skimp out and would always opt for the top-of-the-range model, even if it's a couple of years older, tbh.

It's the coupé version and it's had compliments and been called "a lovely car" by numerous people.

RE: Spoilers, I was watching Top Gear yesterday morning and Clarkson was on the very subject. He pretty much confirmed what I already told you all. They have a major impact from 110mph+ - speeds which most modern cars are capable of.

But rarely do!

Plus wasn't Clarkson talking about a Zonda - not quite a sporty driver's car like an Astra!

Agree with Stevie on this one. I read more of your posts and think do one.

If a spoiler assists cars at high speeds then it is affecting it's performance, rendering it a performance enhancing feature of a car. Simple as.

Thing is most road cars have aerodynamic properties closer to a brick than a F1 car (or a zonda for that matter) and are front wheel drive, both of which reduces the benefits and need of a designed and tested rear spoiler (as a real world example you can see when estate version of cars do perfectly well in road car racing formulas).

Really speaking it's often better have a pop up one (so you don't get the drag at lower speed when you don't need the stability), but again in most cars that have those they aren't set to pop until a pretty high speed (in the case of the UK a completely illegal speed).

If you've got a 700+bhp e-type jag that's built for racing then a meaty rear spoiler is going to be wanted (but even there the front aerodynamics will be the first port of call, as well as the basic stuff such as lightening..... which I guess goes back to the issue that you'd almost certainly gain more ripping all the carpet and soundproofing out of your car than you would fitting even a racing designed and tested spoiler to your car).

Certainly in your Astra the most benefits you'd get would be by changing the front, but of course the best was to do that means you end up leaving half the front end of your car at any speed bump, or even minor road fluctuation.

Thomper, it appears you and Colin Chapman are the two greatest minds in automotive aerodynamics.

Bit of an obvious subject though? A spoiler provides downforce helping traction. If you are racing on a track this is pretty much essential, but out and about in a chav-mobile :D nah, only good for catching flies Id imagine.

Top model or not.... it's still only an Astra :D
