Skysports.com understands that Derby County are leading the race to sign Newcastle striker Andy Carroll.

The 19-year-old is set to leave St James' Park this summer and a host of clubs from the Championship are battling it out for his signature.

Norwich and Ipswich are also thought to be interested but Derby are in pole position.

Derby are looking to bring in a number of new faces which also include Stockport front-man Liam Dickinson.

However, the Hatters insist they have not received any offers for the highly-rated 22-year-old.

No bids

"We are a little bit disappointed that there are clubs expressing their interest through other means but from our point of view there have been no bids and Liam is not for sale," said Stockport managing director Mark Maguire.

"I don't think any club could actually afford Liam so he will remain an integral part of our plans going forward.

"It has not been long since he signed an extended contracted and we are looking forward to him playing another key role for us next season in what is a young and developing side."

I think most probally won't make it. It only takes one to make it for it to be worth while. Like a Messi or a Cesc. :)

However if we need to have so many home grown or club trained players then they are going about it the right way are they not?

Well we wont know for a fair few years yet Leazes, this bright new setup had nothing to do with anybody that's broke into the first team as of yet. It's been working with the mess left by the shoddy old setup, you remember them don't you?

indeed. I remember the Champions League and 3 consecutive top 5 finishes for the first time in 50 years with great fondness.

Shame the trophy winning teams all don't see the need to use their cheque books and have won all their honours with a shit load of home grown players. They obviously all need to setup a brand new spanking youth academy just like ours that produced the players I've listed above.

They either get sold or released, and if sold a sell on clause added, and as i've said it only takes one for it all to be worth while.

Hey, Mongaloid, have a word.

Your favourite setup produced the players you mentioned, not the new setup.

Man U seemed to do ok with their crop of youngsters, Beckham, Scholes, Butt, the Nevilles etc. Liverpool struggled by with Carragher, Fowler, Owen, Gerrard and so on.

Sometimes you make this too easy Leazes.

Can't believe you see investing in youth as a bad thing. :)

hey mongo, the new setup isn't a new setup, thats the point. And I never said its a bad thing at all.

But if the new setup doesn't back the managers like the old setup ie for first team players, those Champions League days will not be repeated. Thats also the point.

And i know that yourself and others are more than happy to write off anything done by the fat bastard and his board of directors, whether good or bad, simply because its the , eeerrrrr. fat bastard and his board of directors, but the penny should be dropping by now ..........

what facts? The players you mentioned were products of the old system, this new system has had zero time to show anything like a finished product, you're just on an endless bid to try and undermine the new regime because of your inexcusable affection for the old.
