Emre quits Toon say Fenerbahce

May 30 2008 By Lee Ryder

NEWCASTLE UNITED have parted company with Turkish ace Emre tonight according to reports in Istanbul.

The diminutive star is currently preparing for Euro 2008 with Turkey in Austria and Switzerland but sources at Fenerbahce tonight claim the Turkish Superliga giants have made the midfielder their first major signing of the summer.

A statement on Fenerbahce's official wesbite tonight said: "Fenerbahce reached an agreement with Newcastle United in order to sign the Turkish superstar Emre Belozoglu."

The player arrived on Tyneside during the Graeme Souness era from Inter Milan for £3.8million and won a place in the hearts of the Toon Army after a stunning free-kick won the derby in 2005 at St James's Park in a 3-2 victory.

Read this in a few places now, all from the same source though. Wouldn't surprise me. Canny fella but never really shone. Wouldn't say he had many shockers, just a few very average games. Proper player ™. Good luck to him though.

Edit : dumb spelling

Canny footballer, but frustrated the fuck out of me personally. Had loads of talent, but chose to sit deep and pass backwards most games making him tidy but ineffective. Hopefully he'll get his mojo back in Turkey.

Aye because its been talked about on N-O since last night......

I only asked Tom to delete a thread I started cause it didn't look 100% to me that the deal was done. FWIW the rumours started on Wed.

Judging by the site statement "sign Turkish superstar Emre" wouldnt surprise me if they paid upwards of 6m.

A statement on the club's website read: "Fenerbahce have reached an agreement with Newcastle United in order to sign the Turkish superstar Emre Belozoglu and make him become a canary."

Newcastle have yet to comment although it would not be a surprise if he were to leave St James' Park.

No transfer fee has been mentioned but the Magpies are expected to value the midfielder in the £3.5million bracket.

The former Galatasaray and Inter Milan star has largely failed to shine on Tyneside after joining the Magpies in July 2005.

The 27-year-old came to prominence after helping Turkey to a third-place finish at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
