Have you actually heard other countries national anthems? Most of them fall into 3 camps: 1. children's we've got far too many tubas marching band dross 2. something aimless off a film sound track 3. a rumba nightclub. Less is more.

Country music, NASCAR, tractor pulls, lawnmower races, grits, scrapple, Cracker Barrel, Harleys, etc. are just some of the "cultural advances" given to us by the central and southern States.

 

As regards this hatred of USA perceived flag-waving and jingoism, a lot of false patriotism has of course gone on here since 9/11 but finally people are beginning to see beyond the rhetoric.

On Poppy Day, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, or any other day I find appropriate, I fly the Union Jack outside my house. My avatar should tell you something 'Offshore'.

I live on the coast as well (I live in Florida) but I was raised in Georgia which is considered by many to be the heart of the south and the region that you are referring to. The "cultural advances" that you list is a bit one sided IMHO. If we are referring strictly to the regions that you mentioned (South and Central) then you should also take into account the other "cultural advances" as well. It is a shame that you didn't list Martin Luther King Jr., William Faulkner (won the Nobel Prize in Literature), Tennessee Williams, Harper Lee (Pulitzer Prize winner), and Truman Capote.

 

You also list country music as "trash" coming out of the south. Country music is a direct descendent of folk music from the British Isles. However, the music references are really down to opinion isn't it? Fair play to you if you don't like country music. There are other types of music that came from the south that one should take into account as well especially rock and roll. Artists such as Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, James Brown, etc.

 

NASCAR? I actually recommend going to a NASCAR race. I took a friend of mine from the UK who is a rally/formula 1 fan when he was visiting this past summer and he had a great time. There is more to racing than what meets the eye (in any type of racing) and the same goes for NASCAR. If you don't know the details of it and only see it as men driving and only making left turns than that is up to you. But to state that it is trash is the equivalent of someone saying that soccer/football is crap because all they do is run around kicking a ball and scoring only two times in ninety minutes. I am willing to bet that you would call them ignorant and maybe try to explain the nuances that make the game exciting to you.

 

As for lawnmower races ( ), grits, scrapple, Cracker Barrel,... those shouldn't even register on the "culture radar". Hardly huge examples of "Americana".

That would be one hit wonder Harper Lee... but if I was to write only one book, I would hope that it was that good/successful!

 

I like Capote, not in my top ten though.

 

As for more recent authors from the area, none that I would consider to be great but then again, that is usually an adjective that is given to someone after they have died. Popular southern authors today would be: John Grisham, Anne Rice, John Berendt, and Cormac McCarthy. I guess these could be recommended. Their works have all been made into movies anyways.

NO, but it's where Disneyland is, and it has a Stanley Cup winning hockey team the Anaheim 'Ducks' and a World Series winning baseball team the Anaheim 'Angels'. Used to have a football(soccer) team in the old NASL league called the 'California Surf' which played at the 'Angel' stadium in Anaheim. Former Newcastle 'keeper' Mike Mahoney played for the 'Surf'. After the 'Surf' folded Mike went on to play indoor soccer with the 'Los Angeles Lasers' in the old MISL. When he retired from the game he and 'Clyde Best' of West Ham fame tried to get a janatorial business going but it didn't work out and Mike ended up driving a beer delivery truck. Mike and I were quite friendly until a few years ago when he and his wife Janet decided to return to his hometown of Bristol where to my knowledge he works for the post-office.
