Liverpool have confirmed they have secured the services of Borussia Dortmund's Switzerland international defender Philipp Degen for next season.

The 25-year-old was out of contract with the Bundesliga outfit this summer, meaning The Reds were free to negotiate a deal with him for the start of the 2008/09 Premier League campaign.

The right-sided full-back will battle it out with Steve Finnan and Alvaro Arbeloa for a place in Rafa Benitez's starting XI next term once he completes his switch on 1st July.

Spanish tactician Benitez believes Degen will bring some useful experience to Anfield, as he has played in the UEFA Champions League along with representing his country.

"Philipp is still young but has gained great experience from playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and on the international stage with Switzerland," he told the club's official website.

"He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top level football.

"He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality. His strength is going forward and I am confident he will prove to be a quality addition to our squad."

Degen needed no second invitation to snap up The Reds' offer after confirming his belief they are one of the biggest clubs in world football.

He stated: "When I received the offer from Liverpool, there was no doubt I would accept it. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am looking forward to the challenge of playing in the best league there is."

He's been absolutely crap for Dortmund. Sometimes decent at going forward, but a bramblesque defensive liability. They are welcome to him.

I can't believee that Finnan doesn't get much of a look in anymore for them. Carragher is going to be bumped out of centre back next season apparently, too.

That’s cause finnan is getting on a bit and i think he had a few injury’s last season.

I thought he was just out of favour. He's been shite for the ROI(under Staunton anyway).

Chelsea are another team with a shit load of right backs, Bosswinga(sp), Ferreira(sp), and Belleti(I've probably spelt all of those wrong).

I don't rate Ferreira, but that's just being greedy.

And Brum aren't in Premiership.

Same with Derby and Reading. :)

To be fair to Ritchie, at no point does he state that this is 'Premiership Clubs only' .... :)

So Spurs and Chelsea are the only ones to really bring anyone in and the mackems are already saying that they are going to 'overtake' us purely because Ashley hasn't spent hundreds of millions in the first few weeks

Middlesbrough have signed Sparta Rotterdam striker Marvin Emnes in a £3.2m deal.

Emnes, 20, signed a four-year contract at the Riverside after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

The Rotterdam-born Netherlands Under-21 international played 55 games for Sparta and was named as their Player of the Year last season.

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said: "We feel we have signed an exciting young player in Marvin."

Southgate added: "He can play anywhere along the front line, so he has versatility to go with pace, energy and technical skills.

"Marvin is very enthusiastic about coming to England and the challenge of Premier League football.

"He also fits the profile of the sort of players we want at Middlesbrough in that he is young player with hunger, energy and pace."

Southgate also revealed Ajax and Feyenoord had been interested in Emnes.
