Scottish Mag 3 Posted May 19, 2008 Share Posted May 19, 2008 NEWCASTLE United took a spot of French leave over the weekend as they continue to scour Europe in their bid to bring the best young talent to St James’s Park. Director of Football Dennis Wise and assistant manager Chris Hughton were in France taking in Metz’s game with Le Mans. There were several top young stars on view, but I am told the player United were watching did not have a particularly good game and that they will have to go back for another look. Wise, vice-president Tony Jimenez and chief scout Jeff Vetere have not been letting the grass grow under their feet while Kevin Keegan, Chris Hughton, Steve Round and Terry McDermott have been keeping the club in the Premier League. They have run the rule over Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano of Seville – a club with whom Jimenez is well connected. But another well-connected club, Real Madrid, are tipped to snatch the man dubbed the bad boy of Brazilian football. The Chronicle revealed on March 8 that St Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis had been watched on a couple of occasions by United’s scouting team and last weekend Keegan went to France to have a look himself. But Gomis’ price will have gone up over this weekend after he was selected for the first time for the full French squad for their pre-Euro finals training camp – in preference to the 30-year-old Juventus striker David Trezeguet. Meanwhile, Keegan will need all his persuasive powers if he is going to convince United’s top brass that one of his main targets, Richard Dunne, should find a peg in the St James’s Park dressing room. The word I am hearing is that at 28, the Manchester City player is too old and, bearing in mind he will want a three-year £60,000-a-week contract, Keegan must feel his chances of landing the central defender are not good. But Wise is keen on Bournemouth’s young Welsh Under-21 striker Sam Vokes, and would have already done a deal had not the south coast club gone into administration. Probably, followed by another innings of absolute dross like in the winter. His fielding has looked a bit shakey this test, fluffed two potential runout chances today.
