Besty 4
We understand that United were represented in the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium on Saturday, as Stuttgart ended their season with 2-2 draw at home to Bielefeld. The object of our interest is claimed to be the home side's 22 year-old forward Mario Gomez (pictured). And Gomez was on target from the penaty spot as Stuttgart drew 2-2 and claimed an Intertoto spot. Gomez signed a new five year deal at Stuttgart last summer in the wake of their league title success and has scored 28 goals in 32 club appearances this season. He's also expected to be an automatic starter for the German national side in Euro 2008 after having won nine senior caps to date and scored six times. Inevitably Gomez has attracted the attention of a host of top sides across England and Europe, all of whom could offer the lure of Champions League football next season. They are resigned to losing Gomez in the not too distant future, most likely to be next season. Though much might depend on the impression he makes during the summer. His goal tally is amazing and during the season there have been people from nearly every top club in Europe watching him and some clubs are understood to have made first enquiries. As Gomez is half-spanish his preference is Spain (he said so himself), so I think if an offer from England comes it will have to be one of the bigger clubs who can offer European football. Because what he could get at Newcastle, he already has (and more) at Stuttgart. Nothing wrong with watching and trying to sign this calibre of players, but we will certainly miss out on many of them. Though we actually might have watched more realistic targets in this game.

I know there was dodgy dealings behind it, but mental transfers do happen.
Isegrim 10017
Reading some of the stuff some people come up with over at N-O is ridiculous. The hype surrounding the Premierleague has made some people to lose any perspective. I am not denying that the English league is the better and more attractive one. Still, this doesn't make English clubs attractive propositions by itself. Seriously, apart from the top four teams the interest in English clubs is barely existent. I am anything but a great defender of the German league and its quality, but the way some people scoff at inferior leagues and its clubs is totally deluded. It's only about the last two or three seasons the PL has lived up to its billing as the 'best in Europe' anyway.
Barney 0
Up until the last two or three seasons, as Alex says, I would have thought the German League was around level with the Premier League.
Guest alex
I wouldn't say that but the PL never had the success in Europe to back up their claims about being the best.
Isegrim 10017
Huge article about Gomez and the likeliness of a big summer transfer in my newspaper today. http://www.sueddeutsche.de/sport/weltfussb...40/article.html The main sentence is: Last season also scouts sat densely packed in the stands, and they weren't scouts from Newcastle, Getafe or Udine. They were scouts from Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, from Juventus Turin, Inter Milan and FC Chelsea, and especially the club from Michael Ballack is very keen on Gomez at the moment. The author might be wrong about the interest from Newcastle, but putting the club in line with the likes of Getafe and Udine tells it own story about Newcastle's reputation at the moment imho. I think you're completely right about Newcastle's reputation on the continent, but to be honest, putting us in the same sentence as Getafe and Udinese still makes a for a stupid comparison. I think even people with no particular interest in English football would argue that we're a bigger club than these two. Still, I guess it doesn't really matter. I R Toon Fan 0
I've put a cheeky bet on him being top scorer at Euro's and if he does he wont be coming to us and I wont care because I'll have won £72.
