Solano out some more?

Nolberto Solano will be sidelined for several weeks after receiving the news his injured thigh muscle requires complete rest.

Newcastle United's Peruvian is understood to be devastated at the prospect of having to further postpone his long-awaited return to action in a black-and-white shirt.

He's eager to show the fans he's lost none of the flair and creativity he showed during his first spell at St James's Park.

The experienced midfielder felt fresh pain in his injured muscle on Saturday morning during a light work-out with fellow players returning to full fitness.

Instead of playing his part in a full training session on Monday, Solano visited a specialist to seek a definitive verdict on the injury which has prevented his comeback following last month's move from Aston Villa. The midfielder was told to take a complete break after it emerged a problem which has plagued the 30-year-old for the past six weeks would take longer to heal than at first assumed.

This time last week Solano was confident of lining up against Manchester City - only for Graeme Souness to advise against a premature return to action.

In the interim period the Scot's judgement has proved to be correct - although, until Monday night, Newcastle's manager had no inkling his popular signing could be missing for another month. Solano is well aware of the weight of expectation surrounding his return to action and is relishing the chance to link up with Owen.

The South American believes United's record signing could prove to be the club's best purchase in the modern era after following his progress closely.

But Solano is no nearer to forging an effective working relationship with the former Real Madrid striker following Monday's verdict.

Despite an excellent overall fitness record during a Premiership career spanning seven years, the former Boca Juniors favourite accepts he must tread carefully as he approaches his 31st birthday.

Solano is confident he can continue playing top flight football in England for a further three seasons - and has already talked about extending his current Newcastle deal beyond 2007. But a player whose name was chanted inside St James's Park on the day Michael Owen was first paraded is becoming increasingly frustrated at the delay.

United play at Portsmouth on Saturday and Souness, without revealing the extent of Solano's problem, confirmed: "Nobby will not be involved. At this moment in time Kieron Dyer is the only one of our sidelined midfielders under consideration."

Solano is well aware Newcastle resume hostilities with Sunderland on October 23 and would love to figure in next month's Tyne-Wear derby.

Whether he does feature against the Black Cats remains to be seen, but an intensive rehabilitation programme is planned to start when the Premiership breaks up after the weekend for the next round of international fixtures.

bloody annoying!

i feel sorry for souness. he's assembled a pretty tasty first team but will we ever see them all fit at the same time?

Careful you will have the toontastic version of McCarthyism after you.

"Are you or have you at any time been a supporter of Graham Souness?"

:D

In all seriousness, there has got to be something wrong with the fitness training though.

But he hasn't recovered either? I don't know what's going on but something's not right and it can't be down to luck alone. Also, I thought we'd given up our "hard" training pitch while the Match was on?

I'm not too concerned, still don't think he'll offer us as much as most people are hoping for.

I'd rather have Luque, Dyer and Emre fit.

He's the 3rd best player in the world though, guess who's 1 & 2 :D
