It's not regarded as European competition by UEFA for the sole purpose that it was a one club per city tournament.

Exactly. It was a competition set up to improve trade between cities, no more than that, which is the reason it was only one club per city and why Newcastle finishing 10th got in it.

In the 50's perhaps but in the end it was much more than that.

It's not like it was full of shite really is it? Football is football, UEFA and a badge can't change that.

It was by no means an easy competition.

We finished Tenth but there were clubs in the same competition that finished higher than us that didn't fare aswell, yourselves and Chelsea for a start.

Fair point, it was still a comp that held many shit teams though because of the the one team per city rule.

We got knocked out by Ferencvaros.

Feyenoord

Sporting Lisbon

Real Zaragoza

Vitória

Rangers

Újpesti Dózsa

was our run.

Which is why i was comparing a little to the late 70's champions league.

The european Cup between 77-82 wasn't exactly the hardest tournament in the world.

Was it not?

Easier to win once you were in it but it was much harder to get into it, obviously. It was better back then too imo.

The re-package has basically been to ensure the top sides get further to the end of the tournament without hiccups. The group stage is a farce really with the way the seeding is done.

It is canny ridiculous where you've got a situation where a team can lose three on the trot and still win what is a (sort of) knock-out competition still. You can lose four (or even five) on the bounce in the first stage it and go on to lift the Uefa Cup.

That's the crux of it...

These days with the seedings, there's a much more even spread of talented sides within the tournament. In short, you have to beat the best, to be the best...

Back then, the difficulty of the ride to the final couldn't be determined. You could have the Champions of Spain in Round 1, Italy in Round 2, etc.. or as previously alluded, it could be Luxembourg, Poland, Denmark, etc...

Look at the FA Cup this season for instance - Cardiff have got to the final, not by beating the best teams around but by avoiding them by and large.

Agree with the sentiment that it's a better way to run too although it won't make as much money in that format so it'll never go back.

You couldn't really fuck up back then because of the knock-out format either. Lose 1-0 at home to someone in the 1st leg, 1st round and you were practically out.

Which is what Liverpool did against Forest one year IIRC. (or was it draw at home and lose away?)
