LeazesMag 0
Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan believes time is of the essence as Michael Owen's contract situation at St James' Park remains unresolved. The England international's future has been the subject of conjecture for some time with the striker having just over a year to run on his current deal. Keegan is keen to hold talks with Owen about a contract extension as The Magpies look to tie him down to a long-term deal. However, Keegan is concerned that the club might be taking a risk over Owen's future if they fail to open discussions in the near future. "He has every right to be free at the end of the season and go anywhere he wants," Keegan said in The People. Urgency "That's why I said eight weeks ago we should tie him up. If we don't, and we lose him, then what can I say? "It shouldn't happen and it probably won't happen. But it could. He's not knocking the door down saying what's happening and I'm not pushing things either. "I said what I said and I think Michael knows how I feel. In a playing sense, he's been asked different questions and the answers he's coming up with are world class. "In the position he's playing in for us, nobody in the world could do a better job. He's linking us up and scoring goals. "Instead of having one player up front we've got two. It's like we're playing with 12 men sometimes." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11678_3517663,00.html Edited May 4, 2008 by LeazesMag

I R Toon Fan 0
I think he'll be off. If he does I have zero, count it, zero respect for him. Not gonna say anything bad about him until things get confirmed.

acrossthepond 901
Also think he's gone. Let the record show that I think he'd leave even if we had Johnnie Cochran and Socrates trying to convince him to stay. Mort's done nothing wrong here.

MattM4 0
My prediction/opinion this time last year concerning Owen, was that he'd play more or less the whole season. Do reasonably well and get a few goals, then be sold in the summer for around £10m. For some reason I now think he'll still be a NUFC next season. Fannying around isn't the way to do things like this, the player will go if someone else shows they want him more. Mort should have learned this by now. I R Toon Fan 0
I dont think that Mort is a complete tool. He's said he wants to keep him here and I bet that he has approached Owen and wants to start negotiations, but Owen has said wait till the end of the season I want to see who comes for me if I continue to score goals in the last couple of games. Dont think Mort would just lie back and see what happens, doesn't seem the weed smokin' type imo.

Paul 0
I think he'll stay. Unless one of the big four come in for him, which I doubt they will, I can't see why he'd want to leave. A move to someone like City/Everton/Spurs would be a sideway step imo.

Hadrian 0
im in two minds as to weather the current regime wants him . i made the point yesterday that its good for us having his face with our shirt plastered all over , but he fucks our wage structure up so much , im not sure if they want to continue with it , were chasing strikers it seems still , i bet wise and co would like to bring some in at 50k per week and keep everything inline . is he worth those wages ? is he worth pissing off the rest of the squad by not paying them anywhere near what he gets ? is he worth the likes of oba pushing for 90k contracts cos owens sitting on 110k ones? im not to sure tbh . ewerk 31596
and players the manager wanted to keep were all tied up too. Aye, a bit like that contract Shepherd got Gary Speed to sign... with Bolton. And I agree with Paul, I don't think he'll go because I can't see anyone more attractive than us (with the possible exception of City) being in for him or matching his wages. Gejon 2
I have doubted Owen signing a new contract long before we even knew who Chris Mort and Mike Ashley were. Get the feeling Leazes would prefer us to lose Owen to prove a point.

Get the feeling Leazes would prefer us to lose Owen to prove a point. daft lad. I always got the feeling people like you would have wanted us to get relegated under the last board just so you could prove a point. Its a shame that you can't take facts on face value like, and form opinions from them, instead of looking for every negative you can think of about people who ran the club while qualifying for europe more than everybody but 4 teams over the span of a decade. I hope Owen stays, but then again, I've never had a problem with these despicable "trophy signings".

Hadrian 0
MICHAEL OWEN’S Newcastle future is still up in the air. Toon boss Kevin Keegan is yet to find out from owner Mike Ashley how big his transfer kitty will be this summer. And the fact the Magpies board has failed to offer England striker Owen, 28, a new deal is another cause for concern. Keegan said: “Six weeks ago I asked them to tie Michael up and it has not happened yet. “It is disappointing but not the end of the world. “I have never said to Michael though ‘Stay here and we can get into the Champions League’. “Mike Ashley will support us but the biggest challenge is getting players to come to you. “I get on great with the owner but I never talk to him. “That is better than some managers at the moment. No communication is good.” http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport...icle1128389.ece
