Few things I'm trying to work out at the moment.

 

It's looking like it's going to be an instrument shop and the profit levels on guitars, especially US are quite high and recently there has been a very strong demand and there's always rich 40-50 years olds willing to spend £1-4k on a guitar.

 

Probably wise to throw some records, Sheet music & a small cafe on the side too I dunno.

 

Looking at rent at some places and it's probably going to be a stumbling block to start with.

 

Newcastle doesn't need another guitar shop as Guitar Guitar cant really be rivalled, although i have been advised to seek a franchise out. I'm going to start planning properly once i finish uni, going to get in touch with Rossetti (Gibson europe), Fender and Warwick (Warwick basses, Framus guitars and loads of cheap picks and stuff), probably get in touch with marshall too.

 

So thus far Im needing a location, a local niche`, 98% of a plan, one hell of a Business grant and the other 98% of the plan.

For a speacialist place such as this then you wouldnt need a city centre prime spot, look at the likes of the Drum Centre which is tucked away on a sidestreet down the quayside. They survive well yet nobody must actually pass it accidentally. Music wise you have to compete with an established place such as Windows for instruments, sheet music etc.

 

I still think a bricks and mortar shop on anything specialist is a dangerous thing in this day and age.

Yeh but they exist.

 

Windows, Guitar Guitar, Sounds Live, Sound Control* make Newcastle a no go area unless you are a franchise and can afford the possible losses.

 

*Sound Control have went under as a direct influence of Guitar Guitar.

Tom man, I don't think anyones having a pop at your ambition. At the very least the posts which are sounding a word of caution are highlighting the sorts of questions your potential creditors would be asking you before extending finance. Forewarned is forearmed marra, so it's all good.

Business has very little to do with planning if it had anything to do with planning then all these cunts with Business Admin degrees would be millionaires instead of cunts which is what they are......

I would probably go for something simple but for a guitar shop it has to appeal to the middle classes because apart from middle aged freaks with a guitar fetish that's where the money is.

 

Middle class people are quite happy to pay full RRP & you often see old fellas coming into to shops and spending thousands casually, the shop just has to have the right look and feel to get them in. Strangely I have found out that there is a lot of money in plectrums. Even at an ebay level you can get them for 35p each (when you buy 24), so if you bought them at supplier price you would make a killing, selling in bulk or individual (Between 60p & £1.50).

 

Unless Guitar Guitar closes down Newcastle is a no go and I don't think Durham has the demand.

Yes but significantly, unless he's got his own finances in place (which he hasn't) then he's going to need to present some sort of plan to get finance. So everything that's been mentioned is worth bearing in mind.

You see you already know quite something about the market and ways to build revenue streams (boring words). Don't let the boring bits deter you. It is more likely that good ideas or ideas you have a passion for become successful businesses. That is more or less an accepted fact. An idea with no passion behind it no matter how well run rarely succeeds or delivers above mediocre results.

 

You have the core attributes/knowledge regarding the market and the products ( I feel you already know deep down what will work). Take it from there.

 

Perhaps a custom guitar making service as an add on? I have no idea it's just a thought. It's a thing the rich like.
