Park Life 71
we better go full steam ahead for Arshavin before the Euros now Watched him quite closely in the Uefa game the other night looks good but didn't really wow me. Still he was up against a strong Bayern outfit. Good target but imo not quite in the Luka league. Edited April 27, 2008 by Park Life
Hadrian 0
It all ended in a dutch auction (said like you were there ) with the player probably preferring london and european football (probably now ? ohh you werent there ) - we came close but maybe next time we will land the catch - and all you planks slagging off stevie for posting it just lay off - its meant to be a discussion board and quite honestly its been the most entertaining thing on here for a while - there was substance to it so well done steve (no i am not brown nosing either) and if you get any more i hope you will share them with us. so matter of fact , with fuck all knowledge of what went on . Hadrian 0
At the end of the day it sounds like his club were just pimping him around looking for the highest bidder and in a way if we've stuck to our guns and wouldn't let ourselves be dragged into it, good for us. I think we need to put behind us the days of offering unproven PL players stupid money then regretting it 3 months down the line when they don't do the business. KK and the board seem to know what their doing for me so lets just be patient i reckon. Get some decent players in closes season that are good enough to push us for top eight, get back in europe then bring in the big guns the season after. As they say Rome wasn't built in a day and I think a few fans are getting a little bit excited and carried away with our recent run, were still a long way off becoming a consistently 'good' team, it's going to take time. P.S Stevie doesn't deserve any shit for his info, he was more or less on the nose. Yeah it seems like either we were simply used to bump up the price or pressure Spurs in a deal that was actually effectively already done, or a stupid bidding war where quite quickly you'll end up paying exceptional prices for only pretty good players (and even if he IS very good, it doesn't mean he'll work in the Premiership - much bigger and genuinely better haven't). It'll be an interesting summer now, given that even O'neill at villa is talking about capturing Henry and challenging the top 4 now. All clubs have to pay over the odds now to get the very top players or the real prospects. Fair point but I think we've had our hands burned more than most clubs so I can understand their cautiousness when going in for these so called 'real prospects', after all thats all Modric is. (see Viana) modrics alot more proven than viana ever was like .

Tom 14011
The Sunday Sun CROATIAN sources last night cast doubt over talk that Tottenham landed Luka Modric for less than Newcastle offered for him. The word from White Hart Lane is that they paid Dinamo Zagreb 21 million euros (£16.6 million) for Modric, well below United’s failed bid of around £20 million. But that – along with talk of Modric accepting a wage offer from Spurs worth less than £30,000-a-week – has prompted disbelief in his homeland. And sources close to the Dinamo hierarchy in Zagreb insisted that Modric WAS keen on a move to Newcastle, even after learning of Tottenham’s counter bid late on Friday night. Instead, the consensus in Croatia is that the full fee for Modric will eventually match Dinamo’s £25 million asking price . . . And that Newcastle’s reluctance to bid more than £20 million for the 22-year-old midfielder was what opened the way for Spurs to move in. “Luka really wanted to go to Newcastle, but they would not pay more,” a source in Zagreb told the Sunday Sun. “Dinamo asked for £25 million and also Modric wanted a little more money in wages – but not much more. “So it is strange that the transfer with Tottenham would be agreed for much less money.” Ironically, Newcastle and Spurs have strong links off the field, with Tottenham No 2 Gus Poyet formerly assistant to United director of football Dennis Wise, and Magpies owner Mike Ashley a close friend of former White Hart Lane vice-president Paul Kemsley. United had held a second round of talks with Zagreb vice-president – and Modric’s agent – Zdravko Mamic in London on Friday. But although Modric believed he was Toon-bound as late as Friday night, the Croatian starlet never set foot on Tyneside. Mamic and his brother were in Newcastle for talks on Tuesday, but Modric was NOT with them.

LeazesMag 0
Unfortunately I suspect is this something to get used to (again) over the summer. chose Spurs because they are in London, in europe, or pay the going rate. Any of these or a combination of all 3 This is often the way and why we must always pay over the odds (and often get stung with a player on high wages who wont leave). Players want a number of things (often, not always). a. CL Football b. Bright lights of London c. Uefa football d. Money As we can't offer any of a, b, or c at the moment we need to offer enough of d to make up for it. Just depends how badly the player values abc over d or of course if another club offering abc is in for him. This is the reality. I think we need to get used to the fact that we wont be attracting the big players until we push up the table. However, if we can find some young players who have the potential to become bigger players then even better. you're preaching to the converted mate. The prudency stance has been advocated in the past, lets see how many players we lose before the penny drops Like the previous board who just continued to spend, spend, spend and get themselves further into debt whilst appointing shite managers who got us less and less for our money. Sounds like a sound investment to me. Not like you to slate the new board though..... Champions league ring any bells then Fact is we've lost a player to Spurs, for the 2nd time in 3 months
Gejon 2
Yep I remember the champions league, that was the competition we were in years ago wasn't it? I also remember Souness spending what? £50m? That worked out well, thankfully the club was left in a really good state when Ashley took over.

The club was in a shit state in 1992 mate, nothing since comes anywhere close. Fact is - again - we have lost a player to Spurs for the 2nd time in 3 months, one of whom signed for the club under the board you slate, and then didn't sign for the club under the new board. Work it out. Don't pay the money and you won't get the player, basic facts but no doubt you'll carry on ignoring it and moving the goalposts as you go. Gejon 2
We were in a shit state before so that means its ok? If Shepherd and Co had stayed here I would have been really worried about our future, more and more money would have been thrown at the problem but that doesn't always solve it, Leeds being the prime example. Never mind though, the new board are shit because they won't spend whatever other clubs ask for their players even if they think its a big gamble. Gejon 2
I seem to remember the old board not signing players because they wouldn't meet the asking price or fannied about trying to get players on the cheap anyway.
