Gianfranco Zola has revealed he was offered jobs at Chelsea and Newcastle in the last year.

The former Italy international, who was voted Chelsea supporters' favourite player of all time, was asked to join the coaching staff at Stamford Bridge by owner Roman Abramovich when Jose Mourinho left the club.

Zola, who is the current Italy under-21 coach, was also approached about a role in the new-look St James' Park boardroom when his former team-mate Dennis Wise was appointed a football director in January.

Zola turned down both offers to continue his education with the Italian football federation but he has not ruled out returning to work in England eventually when he feels the time is right.

He said: "Mr Abramovich tried to bring me back. He was very good to me but I said it is may be something for the future. Right now I don't feel ready to work for a club that I care so much for.

"I haven't spoken to Dennis but somebody else contacted me and asked if I wanted to do something with Newcastle. Unfortunately I have commitments with the Italian federation and I would like to carry on what I am doing.

"Coming to work for an English club would be something I would really like to do but right now I am busy."
