Aston Villa goalkeeper Scott Carson has revealed that a rejection from Newcastle United when he was 14 made him determined to make it as a professional footballer.

He told the Sunday Mercury: "I think it was when I was 14 when I went for a trial at Newcastle that I made my mind up that I really wanted to be a professional footballer.

"I never got my contract there so it made me concentrate and work even harder.

"Getting turned away by a club when you're 13 is not nice, so you're not happy. It was hard to take. But I worked hard and thought if I get that chance again I don't want to be disappointed again.

"The uncle of one of my mates used to own a pub and run a pub team so we used to go in there to borrow the nets and put them up on the old school field.

"We used to do it every night when the nights were light for two or three hours. I would come back head to toe covered in mud and my mum would have to hose us down outside!"

Given his age, that puts his trial slap bang in the middle of the Gullit era... At least old dreadlocks didn't get everything wrong...

Scott who? Even if we had have taken him on where would he be in our team now? Given's been the number one during the time Carson's matured and Harper's been an excellent stand-in so we'd probably have sold him anyways, seems like a wasted statement tbh.

the keeper we missed out on was Brad Friedel

Work permit problemo iirc.

Givens been a good keeper, and Harper would have been too. So was Pav, but I think a keeper like Friedel if he'd got that work permit would have won us the extra few points to win the title in 96. We'll never know for sure though.

Aye, possibly. I loved Pav (absolutely class on the deck for a keeper too) but he was prone to the odd clanger (all keepers are but him more so than the really top ones).

I always hated Pav, thought he was shite. Not in the league of Hooper for shiteness, but never liked him when I was a young 'un. Pulled off some class saves like, but as you said, some of the clangers he dropped.

Remember seeing him once like at The Metro when I was a kid, thought he was a giant.

Agree with Jonny - never a big fan of Pav - was prone to some absolute clangers now and then. Good shot-stopper when it was one on one but the amount of flapping he used to do on corners I'm surprise he didn't take off.

Very similar to David James in that one game he was awesome, the next he was abysmal. Considerably better than Hooper and probably on a par with Hislop at the time. Always preferred Tommy Wright between the sticks.

As for Friedal, I'm pretty certain is was before '96 when KK was after him - more 1994 IIRC - we couldn't get a work permit on the basis that he wasn't the no.1 choice keeper at the world cup - that Tony Whatshisface was keeping him out...

Pav was always going to achieve cult status amongst our fans for wearing a 'Pavel is a Geordie' t-shirt when they were parading the 1st division trophy ;)
