Because it was created as a repository for threads that had achieved gold status. The decision was made that once a thread was put in there, it shouldn't be altered otherwise it could lose the value it had.

well, a lad I knew once went for a weekend with his girl friend, and he woke up in the middle of the night to find he'd pissed the bed

 

He rolled her over into his wet side, got into hers, and when she woke up in the morning thought that she had pissed the bed.
