I think we'll fuckin hammer them, they're shit, and they won't handle the atmosphere. 4-1 to Newcastle, Martins hattrick.

"I've met loads of mackems, one of my best mates is a mackem, and they're just like us - good lads, it's a good night out and they're always accomodating down there" - an unforgettable comment seen on this board.

As Nicky Campbell was so very keen to point out on Five Live this morning, it's not a derby.

He went on to discuss tonights Wolves v West Brom match as being up there with the biggest derbies around the world like Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Milan.

;)

Wasn't me. I'll plead guilty of saying and agreeing with the bold bit, but not the rest.

Yeh fuck Boro.

My mate used to play for them and he was a 'local' lad from Stocksley. Only as a youth like but in the same class as downing

If they get their home grown players from North Yorkshire then they are a Yorkshire club!

How can he say it's not ;)

I think the craw that sticks in peoples necks is the clubs being in different cities.

People who don't know the definition of the word anyway.

I've just been having a read about it and the origin of the term seems to be pretty vague. Either way, Wiki "local derby" and what's the first one referenced....

It's just a match between two local rivals. It doesn't have to be between teams from the same city. I remember checking the OED last time this was discussed. Not sure where the derby of Italy (Inter v Juve) fits into that like.

So Real Madrid vs Barca isn't a derby? And Liverpool vs Man Utd not a derby? And Southampton vs Porstmouth? And so on....

Not far off ;)

They fucking hate Real, my mate is from Catalonia and i was wearing my brothers real madrid top, he nearly killed me :icon_lol:

Yes a local derby, anyone that even begins to say its not oh dear................ Not that wiki is the definitive answer to anything, but under the phrase local derby the first example it gives, is yes, you've guessed it.

In terms of success on the pitch the biggest derby is probably Liverpool v Everton, but that's shit as everyone knows, weighing everything up, passion, anger, politics, the works, Newcastle v Sunderland is comfortably the biggest derby in England, people who have played in ours and other derbies, have said that the same on many separate occasions.
