Beating the drop has Keegan set to shop

They might not be able offer the attraction of European football at St James' Park just yet, but Kevin Keegan is convinced that his club have the financial clout necessary to out-muscle Premier League rivals in the transfer market.

"If we're beaten by other clubs, it'll be by other clubs who can offer them more, and I don't mean financially," Keegan said. "I think the summer could be very exciting. I've got an idea who I'd like to bring here, but I might be dreaming,"

Keegan is allowed to dream thanks to the presence of billionaire owner Mike Ashley whose decision to revive his managerial career has been vindicated and who, in the politest possible way, will be urged to put his money where his mouth is in terms of transfer fees and wages for new talent.

As the sports retail tycoon planned to splash the cash on a night out with friends to celebrate a resounding win that all but guaranteed top-flight football on Tyneside, Keegan was looking forward to another spending spree.

"The owner will be going down the town to have a few so I don't think we'll be sitting down for talks tonight," Keegan smiled. "He's the key, I think. No disrespect to [chairman] Chris Mort, the owner is the one who's going to have to find the finances for whatever's going to happen. Once we've decided what we're going to do and what finances are there, we'll do our best to get the players."

Thierry Henry tops Keegan's wish list and Manchester City defender Richard Dunne is certain to be viewed as a possible defensive linchpin.

Keegan, who wants to address an "out-of-balance" squad, put the upturn in fortunes down to a keep-it-simple approach.

"Regardless of what anyone else thinks I've always believed football is a simple game," he added. "Sometimes you can complicate it; sometimes you get people who think they're more important at a football club than they really are.

"Everyone has a place, fitness people, certainly doctors, medical staff, but they all add percentages to it. The most important place is the training ground and the most important thing is training.

"What we've done is trained more, played more football and by doing that we've got the lads confidence to get the ball and play and that's what you can see."

Little dig at the Allardyce regime at the end there.

You`d have been better off keeping Fat Sam in the long run.

Can I borrow the crystal ball when you've finished with it please?

On what basis? Martins wouldn't be playing and would probably leave, N'Zogbia would still be playing left-back and we'd have been playing in "not to get beat" mode for the last few games. I was at the Reading away match and comparing that to being there on Saturday is like chalk and cheese. I agree that no manager should really be sacked after just 20-odd games, but the fact is KK is back now and the football is pleasing the fans again and yielding results.

Bollocks.

His "plan" was for us to endure 3 seasons (at least) which achieve the same as this one - 40ish points and no chance of UEFA. Given any kind of resources and with a half decent squad to start with that is completely unacceptable ambition wise - and thats before style/tactics are mentioned.

If Keegan left in May he'll have achieved enough and I'd thank him - and I don't mean staying up - he has made a lot of people actually enjoy football again and has introduced a priceless commodity - hope.

How much per week would we have to pay Henry!!

Just like going for Baggio!

more chance of signing a 26yr old Shearer

Would it piss on your fire to point out that Shearer was still 25 when he signed for us?

Less chance of that I reckon.

We might we'll have ended up in the Championship first.

Allerdyce might have built a more expensive Bolton in the end, but I think generally his managerial stuff has been a bit over egged.

But whether or not his method might have worked in the long run, it seems that he'd pretty much lost the dressing room by the end.

Fair comment from a Liverpool supporter. I think you should give Souness another chance for the long run...

I'd have a little sex wee if Henry came here, but it's never going to happen.

Didn't you say something similar about Owen coming here?
