May only seem a minor thing but the dropping of the numerical display of the coin is an interesting point.

Easy for us to read 'Fifty Pence', 'Ten Pence', etc... but anyone visiting this country without a grasp of the language may have a problem....

Or is that half the reason? :)

I dinar, won't the number be on the other side of the coin?

Well I suppose it's one way of preparing us for the aesthetic "qualities" of the euro.

Yup, either that or it's got insignia/royal mail debacle written all over it, those are rubbish designs, trying to be too clever by far.

Just flicked on The Wright Stuff whilst eating my fruit n fibre, Matthew Wright outraged that Britannia is no longer on them. Prick. :)

Well it is a nice design, was never going to survive in this PCer than thou age though.

I wonder if it's a subliminal strategy to get everyone ready for the break up of the UK.

They all look fucking horrible.

Everything bar the £ looks like a printing error and the pound looks valueless.

Then again with Browns tax rises on basic shizzle it nearly fucking is ::blink:

Yeah Britannia is taken to be seen as "jingoistic Empire" (even though it was actually created in the days after British Isle were conquer by the Romans, and probably largely goes back to pagan roots in some respects - but when have facts had anything to do with what is Politically Correct? Basically never) and it's a pretty easy target.

Lukelucky demonstrates it perfectly by implying that anyone that doesn't like it is clearly a slavering racist madman/woman whose views should be ignored anyway. Which is basically an "I win" button in terms of genuine debate.

The royal coat of arms doesn't really have that sole connotation and opens up a can of worms that no one is likely to want to get into (monarchy/republic - as much as Brown and Blair before him likely wanked themselves to sleep with thoughts of President Brown/Blair :) ).

That's one way of looking at it I suppose. I always think of Boudica/Boudicea (sp?) when I think of Britannia though and you can't really see how that is any more related to Empire than the new design. It's just a matter of interpretation really although I think you're reading too much into it.

Maybe, if so then it'll likely just be an Insignia-esq waste of time and money, pointless and quickly forgotten.

Britannia has been on British coins for centuries hasn't she? Was definitely on the old penny pre decimilisation.

I have no issue with 'change', I just think the designs chosen look particularly shit. The design of the £2 coin for instance was effective IMO as it covered different technological discoveries....

These designs to me were thought up in about 5 minutes.

But you just know they cost MILLIONS OF POUNDS OF TAXPAYERS' MONEY

According to the article on the BBC, they've paid him a one-off fee of £35,000 aparently....

He's a fucking mug! :)

I was inferring that's it not really worth getting your knickers in a twist about, but feel free to put words in my mouth as usual.

Aye, of course. <_<

(follow up tactic if pressed on the issue is, of course, to make a quick retreat to the nearest bit of "moral" high ground and dig in. :) )

It's obvious what Luke meant. Which wasn't what you were suggesting either.

If it was so "obvious" it wasn't you'd have made a big deal of it, you didn't so that means either I'm right or I'm right. :)
