Guest alex
Was thinking about Mike Leigh's 'Naked' last night for some reason and how good it is and why, for some reason it barely gets a mention as a British classic. Don't even think it's had a proper DVD release. It's grim but it's great. Any others you care to nominate?
Tooj 17
How High. In all honesty this is something I'd have to think back over, as I could name several that people have slated or don't really rate, yet I do. Personal favourites of mine that spring to mind are Alien³ and Predator 2. Both seem to get quite a hammering compared to their more successful counterparts, but if they were stand alone films would be rated a lot more I feel. I will get back to you though on some forgotten gems, as I've got quite a few dvds to siphon through.

SloopJohn 0
i can't really think of many but Fire, Walk With Me is probably one of my favourite Lynch films. yet it's universally panned even by fans of his movies. also. even though i've not seen it, i find it incredible that no one has released Luchino Visconti's adaptation of Camus's The Outsider on DVD yet. incredible novel. fantastic director. it cannot be bad can it? Tooj 17
How High. I had to check the date again. It was just in relation to a conversation me and Alex had the other week. Absolutely terrible film, who actually gives people a budget for shite like that man?

I didn't really like it either I must admit. I loved the first part of the TV series when he was still directing it though. It was pretty different to everything else on TV at the time. I used to love Sherilyn Fenn too. Shame about 'Boxing Helena' like.
SloopJohn 0
it's extremely different to the TV show. it's a David Lynch feature and this is definitely reflected in the films darker tones and distinct lack of humour. but then again, what's ever been funny about a young woman being sexually abused by her father? Yeah, it's not the most humourous of subjects. I remember seeing it with a lass I knew back at university and she cried for about half the film. Was on BBC2 at about 02:00 or something like that, watched it with a couple of lasses from Uni, their faces man.

The problem Lynch had was that films like Blue Velvet kind of attracted the film semiotics and hippie post Camden intellectual crowd.

Happy Face 29
I’m only little, so any older films I’ve seen tend to be the widely recommended ones anyway. Charlies Angels 2: Full Throttle gets an undeservedly bad rap. As does Hulk. The King of Comedy never gets mentioned with Scorsese’s best. And to a lesser extent Bringing Out The Dead is excellent too. Croupier if we’re talking British stuff. JFK’s brilliance gets buried in all the controversy of the subject matter. There’s few films that build tension better. Certainly not Silence of the Lambs which robbed it of the top Oscars. King of Masks deserves UK distribution. Have the Happiness fans seen Storytelling? I think it went straight to dvd over here, but it's just as uncomfortably hilarious.

Park Life 71
to be honest. if i won best director / palm d'or at Cannes. i'd die a pretty happy man. Been to Cannes a couple of times to the festival full of cunts and producers trying to get seed money. Nothing special these days. Having said that they have been supportive of the likes of Mike Leigh. Venice is where it's at. Edited April 1, 2008 by Park Life

Guest alex
Just thought of it now HF but I meant to mention to you that you should check out the work of Julio Medem as, given you love Almodovar (sp?) I think you'd really like his stuff. 'Lovers of the Arctic Circle' and 'Sex and Lucia' are my favs.
