FOOTBALL: TOON READY TO GO TO HEL

By Brian Mcnally

NEWCASTLE lead the Premiership chase for Real Madrid centre-back Ivan Helguera.

Several English clubs are interested in the 44-times capped star, but the Magpies will use their special relationship with Real to jump the queue of interested clubs.

Ironically, Helguera is ready to quit Madrid because of the re-emergence of former Toon star Jonathan Woodgate.

And the vastly-experienced Helguera is also annoyed that Real have dithered over offering him a new deal.

Newcastle boss, Graham Souness already has four centre-backs on the books, but has been attracted by Helguera's outstanding pedigree.

He will be available on a Bosman next summer, but Newcastle are aware that they can get their man for around £500,000.

Dont even think of it!

Ivan isnt half the player he was. He has been great for Madrid along the years, strong at the back and a potent threat with his headers from corners. He has won everything with them and is one of the old boys.

However, all players have their time and his due date has arrived. He isnt anything close to what he was, he is slow and makes errors in La liga - what makes you think he can perform in the fast paced strong PL?

If signed he would be the biggest blunder after Kluivert.

He's only 30 though!

Besides, he'd be a good influence on our defenders too. As long as he isn't ludicrously expensive I'd be happy for him to come on a 2-3 year deal.

Never settle for 2nd best, never in life.

He might be 'only' 30, but he isnt playing that good any more and has deterioirated over the years.

Buy a young promising player who will be a rock in defense for years to come as majority of the team is young

Why are Madrid not hanging on to him? Lets face it, Woodys' debut could have gone better  and he has hardly proved his fitness as he was only on the field for 66 minutes. The whole world knows he has trouble stringing 6-8 games together. Who else have Madrid got in the CB positions, Walter Samuel has moved on hasn't he?

So, flogging them a crock for £13 million gives us a 'special relationship' does it?

(yeah, I know we paid over the odds for Owen to compensate, but still).

They gave him a medical and still bought him.

What argument can they really have?

When Helguera first broke into the Madrid side he played as a defensive midfielder (before Makele played there). I thought he was outstanding there. When he switched to centre-back he was still a good player but I always thought he was a bit dodgy defensively at times. Playing for Real isn't always easy for a defender though.
