Besty 4
Aston Villa are set to battle it out with Newcastle United in the race to sign 18-year-old striker Sam Vokes. The Magpies are in advanced negotiations with Bournemouth's administrators to sign the 18-year-old, but Villa could hijack the deal if Martin O'Neill gets his way. Magpies officials are hoping to pull off a bargain £250,000 swoop on the proviso that the Welsh Under-21 star is loaned back to the struggling League One outfit until the end of the season. But O'Neill has also targeted Vokes and will try to hijack the United deal, according to reports. The Southampton-born teenager - who holds dual Welsh-English nationality - has bagged 10 goals for Bournemouth in 24 starts this season, including both in the 2-0 victory over Hartlepool earlier this month. He was part of Brian Flynn's Wales Under-21 side that beat France 4-2 in November in front of a crowd packed with Premiership scouts. http://www.eatsleepsport.com/articles/705333.html and http://www.shieldsgazette.com/nufc/United-...250k.3875492.jp and http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/2008/0...72703-20617218/ Edited March 13, 2008 by Besty
Besty 4
Behind the first-team turmoil at Newcastle United, moves have been made in recent months to snap up some exciting young talent from across Europe as Dennis Wise and his scouting team identify targets who can play a part in what they hope will be a bright future for the club. Defender Ben Tozer joined from Swindon Town in January and now another League One player could be on the way to Tyneside. Latest on the list according to respected local journalist Alan Oliver is Bournemouth's 18-year-old striker Sam Vokes, one of a number of Wales Under-21 internationals currently making a name for themselves. Vokes has come of age recently despite the Cherries' financial turmoil, which has led to administration and looks set to lead to his £250,000 exit. Braces against Nottingham Forest and Hartlepool have brought the scouts down to the South Coast with Newcastle just ahead of Aston Villa in the running to sign the player. http://www.squarefootball.net/article/transfer.asp?tid=
