not really

38150

It's very straightforward.

I don't agree with people taking something for free that they should be paying for.

Any clearer?

38162

You're assuming they would buy everything they download in the first place.

Which is a criminal act that affects my industry.

It's not hard to understand why I have a problem with it is it?

38146

It's understandable, that doesn't make it right or does it make it the only opinion in the industry.

Thought you had a trade business btw, so how much are you really making from your music? There are plenty of bigger fish who don't agree with you.

Some musicians are less concerned with the industry and more concerned with their talent.

Are you saying you've never downloaded, listened to or installed a single piece of software AF that you should have paid for??

38155

No, I'm not saying that.

I used to use cracked software in my studio. It costs over £600 and I felt it was too much. So, I got a free pirate copy.

Over time however, it occured to me that I have no reason to feel unhappy about people stealing music if I was stealing software.

So I bought the legitimate version and have the credit card bill to prove it.

If you don't pay for something, your perception of it's value goes down.

People who still buy music aren't to blame.

Not paying for music is theft.

What's not to understand?

38144

So you don't have a problem with people who both download and pay for music?

38163

If they pay for the downloads, of course not.

Did you read the whole thread? People who download music freely but also buy music in whatever format.

So you bought the software later after downloading it for free first. Which is people on here have said they do.

Hypocrasy tbh.

I understand your argument, and I know musicians who feel the same as you.

The argument is: better to have someone get into your music for free and hope they buy something later.

I have some time for the argument, but I feel that culturally, not paying for music in the long run is a bad thing.

More of a case of spoiling for a fight I feel. Might be hypocrisy for either of us to point that out though!

Well in a society based on the rule of law anyone who breaks the law can expect to be punished - seems pretty obvious to me....................................

Even though album sales are at their highest for a long time.  Just the rich wanting to get richer....

38181

Is that true, I honestly thought it had gone the other way. Was I a victim of industry propaganda? Why are the big boys then agreeing to deals which are cutting into their profits?

No, I'm a sole TRADER which is a kind of self employment.

I make an average living from music. It's hard going and there's no real shortcuts for what I do (songwriting, TV music). I love what I do though, so I consider myself fortunate.

I'm going to be looking for a publishing deal in the spring after I have finished recording my album. I probably won't release it commercially, but hope to have songs covered by bigger artists.

So when you run off on your little jaunt to central Africa if the laws there happen to be a little on the totalitarian side, legal cannibalism, that's just tough? We shouldn't intervene or question them?

If you think everyone here goes out and buys every download they liked then you're mistaken. IMO. TBH.

I obey the laws whereever I am - Saudi, the USA, Singapore, Oz

I'd advise you to do the same if and when you travel to "interesting" places

And pray tell me which country has "legalised cannibalism"? I think you've been reading the Daily Mail again.................

No I genuinely thought you were a plumber or something, must be thinking of someone else on here. I do get that self employed people can work in the music industry.

Your seem to think that musicians could only disagree with your argument for personal benefit, so that small bands can get themselves out there. Some people feel there are larger issues at stake.

You sound like you're really a business man as opposed to an artist to be honest. Just from my experience.

That was a bit tongue in cheek to be honest Rob, but their former dictator was charged with cannibalism I believe. My real point is just because it's legislation doesn't mean it's right. I have a problem with how the law helps big business but does not punish it. I feel I have regularly been the victim of theft from big business, my only recourse? Don't use them again. We get what we accept.

I also agree with you that smoking a spliff walking through Turkish customs is not adviseable, for example.
