Newcastle Eye £12M Bid For Celtic's Aiden McGeady

Feb 23 2008 Exclusive by Keith Jackson

NEWCASTLE boss Kevin Keegan has begun laying the foundations for a s12million summer bid for Celtic golden boy Aiden McGeady.

Record Sport can reveal Keegan had to abort a plan to run the rule over the player in person at Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Barcelona. He instead sent right hand man Terry McDermott to Glasgow, along with a senior director from St James Park.

McDermott returned south to tell Keegan it will take "funny money" to tempt Celtic into selling the fabulously-gifted 21-year-old. Now Keegan will spend more time monitoring the player and deciding whether or not to weigh in with a massive cash offer at the end of the season.

Keegan has been promised a s50m war chest to rebuild his firstteam squad when the transfer market reopens for business and is keen to draw up a list of priority targets as early as possible.

But McDermott did not see enough of McGeady's skills against Barca to be convinced the Republic of Ireland international is worth such a huge chunk of Keegan's budget.

Newcastle believe it will require a bid of at least s12m to bring Celtic to the table but McGeady was not given the chance to justify that massive fee on a night when Celtic were dominated and defeated by the classy Catalan outfit.

Keegan, though, remains a big admirer and will track the winger's form over the coming weeks as he prepares to reconstruct an ailing side flirting with a top-flight relegation battle.

Terry Mac was up in Glasgow having a look at McGeady on Wednesday. Firstly of all the jock footballers of recent years, I think McGeady is by far the most skilful, the thing that lets him down is his final ball all too often although this has really improved. A Celtic supporting jock associate of mine used to tell me he was shite, but typically he knew fuck all about football, and whenever I've watched Celtic McGeady has stuck out like a sore thumb, but it's raw talent he has, he's no where near being the finished article, and it's up for debate whether he could handle the Premiership. How many players have come from that league and been found out? Petrov for one who you'd often hear the jocks describe as "werruld class". So while I think a move for him would be welcome given his undoubted potential, 4 or 5m should be the most we should pay, even in this day and age, 12m no no no no.

Before this season I could understand why your mate thought he was shite, you could see that he had flashes of talent but was just too 'lightweight' and blew hot and cold.

I agree with you in that it would be a big risk for that sort of money, look at Shaun Maloney as well, won Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year up there, came down to the PL and looked absolutely shite (thought he has looked better recently). The list goes on: Petrov, Ferguson and Liam Miller all looked like good midfielder in the SPL but couldn't cut it down south. I haven't seen much from Mc Geady to suggest that he'd be any different from the rest of these players.

I doubt he could cut it in the PL, and £12m is a huge risk. He's looked a bit better this season, but he's always looked out of his depth at International level, imo.

You're right Barney, that's why I think 4m would be a fair price, no SPL player is worth more than 5m IMO. The thing that distorts the prices are the gobshites who support Celtic and Rangers. They really believe they're big clubs like Manchester United, they're not even warts on Man Utd's cock, but they treat mediocre failed players in big leagues like they're Pele. Look at Chris Sutton, Alan Thompson, they even said Boumsong was too good for Newcastle and we'd have to sell him within 6 months, and I think it will be the same with McGeady. The said jock I was on about once boasted Stilian Petrov would comfortably be the best midfielder in England, he's not even the best midfielder in Villa Reserves, so I hope we don't fall for the same thing again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Couple of comments on my Gazza vid on youtube about McGeady.

if gazza was such a world class player and genius like you make him out to be, then why at the peak of his carear did he join the 2nd biggest club in the lowly SPL?... why not a bigger league

as for mcgeady and his future,,, i'm sure he wont be speaking to plastic parrot's and beating his wife, he's only 21 and he's a;ready doing what gazza hardly did... playing in the champions league!

wee mcgeady would rip that fat wife beating crank to pieces...

Must be class then.

I think the last big transfer that came down from Scotland that I honestly thought would be worth it was Kenny Dalglish.

I'm struggling to think of one since and that says everything.

Other than Dalglish the best jock to come down and be a top player here was Gary McCallister when he moved from Motherwell to Leicester

£12m seems like too much, but I don't doubt Kev's judgement.

Bollocks, not one recent scottish player would have been good enough for the the toon before keegan, let alone for £12m. Total fucking bullshit.

Having attended both Scotland and Newcastle matches over the last couple of years with the shit we have been subjected too at St James Park I would quite happily see a few of them walk into our team.

That is not an endorsement.
