Guest Stevie
Has anyone been abroad for a football weekend not involving the toon? If we're not playing I'd really fancy one. I think probably Germany, Milan or Barcelona would be my preferred destination. Hamburg, Bremen, Munich, Dortmund and Schalke (Gelsenkirchen), are places I'd love to watch a game. Apparently the kraut football experience is excellent, the only problem is every flight I've looked at to Germany is like 120 quie return plus, anyone know any cheap deals, or what the Bundesliga is like. Apparently you can drink your beer in your seat. I really fancied Hertha Berlin v Schalke in March but it's I want to get away with paying less than 200 quid, any suggestions, or has anyone been on this sort of caper? Guest alex
Keep meaning to do this but never seem to get round to it. My Dad's been to watch Barca in La Liga a couple of times. I went the last time we played them in the CL. I'd probably go for Barcelona or Milan too. I think Easyjet go to Berlin now from Newcastle btw. sweetleftpeg 0
I'm on a stag do in Prague in May and I'm trying to persuade the lads to go and see Sparta play. We're literally round the corner from their ground and they're at home to Banik Ostrava..which is Pavs team iirc.
Guest Stevie
Never partaken in one like but it's something I'd love to do. Anyone know any cheap flights to Buenos Aires? I know someone thats been to La Bombanera for Boca v River, and he said it was pwopa mentuw. The same kid has been to an OF game and said there is just no comparison in terms of colour and atmosphere, to the big derby in Argentina, which I personally believe to be the biggest club game in world football. What you have to remember is only English and Scottish sides have a longer history than Argentinian sides. Their league was up before any mainland European league. Alex, they stopped doing flight to Berlin. I've been to Ajax, and other grounds in Holland, France, Belgium and Spain watching England and the toon, but I think a few kraut trips could be good. Hertha v Schalke, Dortmund v Schalke, Hamburg v Bremen, Bayern v Stuttgart anything like that would be good, or even something down to earth like St Pauli v Hamburg. sweetleftpeg 0
My mate went to a Dortmund game in the ealry 90's and said he was shitting himself. Turned out the kid he was on exchange with was a secret neo-nazi, and took him in with the nutters. The only German phase he still knows is 'please don't tell them I'm English.' Meenzer 15877
Alex, they stopped doing flight to Berlin. Still can't figure out why Newcastle Airport can't support a cheap route to somewhere in Germany. There's only Düsseldorf with Lufthansa IIRC, and that's not much good for anybody (though I suppose it puts you within an hour or two of a few canny teams). Barney 0
Me and around 8 mates did Barca last year. Got flights cheap enough. Had to be careful booking dates though as the matches can be changed from a Sunday to a Saturday. We did 2 nights, staying in an apartment just off Las Ramblas. Great craic. Got a brilliant game too. Ronaldinho scored two(despite being a lazy shite) and set up one. We've looked at doing another one, but couldn't really decide on location. Ajax Bayern Munich Prague Sporting Lisbon Milan were all on the list. All great cities, with decent teams. Bayern is difficult to get tickets to, Milan might not be the best city for a load of lads on the lash, but I'd love the footy.

Watching a Hertha game is probably a good idea as you'll have the best chance to get tickets. It will be more difficult for those "derbies" you mention. St. Pauli vs. HSV isn't going to happen in the near future if not for a cup game. Isn't HLX flying between Newcastle and Hannover? You get sometimes decent offers from HLX. Hannover isn't a bad team currently and the stadium quite nice (haven't been there myself since it got rebuilt though). Also it's not too far from Hannover to Hamburg ... or Kassel to watch a proper team.

HLX were swallowed up by TUIfly a while back and I could have sworn they suspended their Newcastle-Hannover route, hence my comment above, but it's right there on the website. Maybe I was getting it confused with their Edinburgh-Hamburg route, which certainly bit the dust after the merger.
Guest Stevie
There's loads of big german teams, I'd like to go and see. Bayern are the biggest, but there are about six or seven who could say they're as big as us, HSV, S04, BVB. 1FCK, BSC etc... any of them would do, somewhere with plenty drugs and red lights district too, nar maybe 5 years ago, just good beer and good football would do and no train journeys longer than two hours. Isegrim 10041
It's just over an hour from Hannover to either Hamburg or Bremen. Both decent cities and "big" football clubs. Bremen is also the home of the Becks brewery who make a decent beer (the real Becks - not the shite Becks Vier stuff you get in England).

Guest Stevie
Boca Jnrs ~ River Plate does get the juices flowing though This is 3 hours before the game I love this tune its so catchy. We wouldnt have as many fat cunt fans if they were all this energetic.... Becks and Becks Vier both shite, and Werder Bremen aren't what I class as a big club, look at their attendances up from 1960-2000, never above 30,000 even Boro can better that. Well in regards to Becks it is probably a question of taste. But your obsession about the sizes of clubs is hilarious. Especially when it is as ignorant as in the case of Werder Bremen. I doubt that you would find many Germans agreeing with you. Probably even the vast majority of HSV fans wouldn't deny that Bremen have the status of a "big" club. There are many facts to consider, such as the size of the city and especially the stadium (which was pretty small for a long time and only vastly improved in the last ten years. It will be the size of SJP when the latest "upgrade" is finished in a couple of years. Average attendances will further raise too). Anyway, I don't see the point in solely looking into decade old data to define the current status of a club. Of course, history matters, but the "size" of a club isn't fixed, especially it is possible for clubs to grow. Would you reject Bayerns claim to be a big club because they were rather small until the early 60s (in fact so small that they were not deemed worthy to get chosen for the Bundesliga - in contrast to Bremen btw). Bayern's success came in the late 60s and 70s, and attendances only started to grow after they build the Olympic stadium. And what is with those "big" clubs who had huge attendances and success several decades ago. Do they remain big clubs just because of their long distant history? I know these kinds of arguments from German fans as well (for size read tradition). It normally comes from people who have a massive inferiority complex and are desperately trying to prove something. Whatever this actually is...
