Dr Gloom 22143
the 90s were a golden era for strikers: bati-gol, ronaldo, shearer, shevchenko. del piero et al. you have the likes of cristiano ronaldo and messi today who have re-written the rule book for what is capable in terms of goals and assists, but i do wonder if the move to more defensive football, often with just one lone striker, is why there are fewer traditional strikers of that quality around today. or perhaps i'm just getting a bit sentimental about those years. Rayvin 5294
Aye, this is the era of attacking midfielders, shadow strikers, false 9s and Raumdauters. Many of the traditional strikers have been killed off and replaced by people like Ozil.
Dr Gloom 22143
also, strikers have to be a certain type to play that lone role and do shitloads of running off the ball.

I don't think it's just being sentimental. You've missed out Romario and Van Basten. The latter was probably one of the top 10 players of the century. I think, especially in his heyday before injuries caught up with him, Christian Veiri was brilliant too. Imagine him alongside Ronaldo at Inter were it not for their injuries coinciding. I thought Hernan Crespo was a fantastic player at Parma as well. George Weah was another one. Serie A also had some great no. 10s back then too. You've mentioned Del Piero but, good as he was, he wasn't up there with Roberto Baggio. Beppe Signori too, not to mention Zola. How many good strikers did Newcastle have in the 90s as well: Shearer was genuinely world class at Blackburn and when he first arrived here. Sir Les, Asprilla, Andy Cole and Pedro too. I've probably missed a few as well

Rayvin 5294
Are defenders just better these days? Also, I wonder how much tiki-taka is responsible for this. I don't think that's a style of play that benefits the traditional striker really.

Came from an opposition corner. Best bit was the cool as fuck finish from the edge of the box. It was againt Vicenza or somebody like that. Vialli was class as well alongside Ravenelli at Juve. Look at that era - Nesta, Maldini, Costacurta, Baresi, Viechowod, Kohler, Ferrara, etc., etc.
