Happy Face 29
Ah shit, my mistake. Taylor does have strength, particularly when he's barging players over on the edge of the area. He even makes Ameobi look patient in the tackle tbh. How many penalties does this spanner give away anyway? None this season.
LeazesMag 0
LM, genuine question. What do you think are Taylor's (maybe a bit raw) strengths that make him an exceptional talent? I don't think he's exceptional, but it depends what you look for in central defenders. I think he has the strength, courage, desire, heart and committment that you want in a centre half. I think people are overstating his supposed lack of positioning, reading the game etc, of course he's made some mistakes. All goals come from mistakes, according to coaching manuals. They learn from experience. There are loads of centre halfs that have played and improve all through their careers ie Richard Dunne, Jamie Carragher, going back further, Jackie Charlton [and don't tell me the game has changed because Richard Dunne in particular is just like what Jackie Charlton was] Taylor for me is like those players, he'll just get better all the time as he plays. He'll be solid and dependable and won't hide when the chips are down.

Saying that though, he could have conceded one on Saturday and he should have conceded one against Man Utd when he chose to randomly stick a leg out with Ronaldo running at him. Guest alex
He needs to start cutting the errors out if he is going to develop though. I think what worries me about him more than anything is that he hasn't developed much in my eyes. That was his 100th start for the first team in a competitive match according to .com. Hardly inexperienced any more. I know he's young but experience is a bigger factor than age imo.
Sima 0
You're basically proving outsider's views that it's all about commitment and pride as well. Lets just fill our team with 11 grafters eh, with absolutely no footballing qualities whatsoever?

Well, I started by saying someone that has been accused of lacking heart and commitment then ended with changing it to more than me. Vidic has more of those qualities than Ferdinand so it could have easily applied to him in the end.

No, I won't say that the game has changed in that way, but I very much disagree about people overstating positional skills and reading of the game. I think these are the skills that separate players of international standard from ordinary players. And imho Taylor is lacking seriously in these departments and more worryingly not really learning to edge out his shortcomings. Making mistakes is one thing, making the same mistakes again and again is another. His poor positioning and timing often means that he realises problems far too late. He is making up for it by his commitment, but this is far too often resulting in needless fouls. Also his distribution to the game is very poor. His passing too often puts his team mates under pressure (especially Given who is very poor with the ball at his feet anyway). Again this imho down to his poor understanding of the game. I am not saying that I don't think that Taylor won't get better and prove himself as a decent Premierleague player. But I can't see him becoming a leading defender at club or international level. I hope to be proven wrong though.

Curbishley is an average manager at best, suited to small clubs like Charlton and West Ham, with zero personality, zero charisma. A big job like us, ManCity etc would be far too much for him. I agree to make the step up takes more footballing ability -as an extra dimension - but to be honest if Taylor performs for us and wins a few England caps like Carragher for Liverpool I'll be quite happy with him. Like many people, I think playing alongside a real quality partner would bring on this side of his game further, but that partner certainly isn't Cacapa. Guest alex
Re: the backpasses to Given, how often does he control the ball with time and space and then turn towards goal and give it back to Given? I know the movement from the rest of the team and players wanting the ball etc. isn't great but giving it back to Given, with his awful distribution, is just passing the buck imo.
