And the Newcastle boss is confident the striker is willing to pledge his long-term future to United in a lucrative new deal. Speculation has raged over Owen’s future throughout his injury-ravaged spell on Tyneside. And talk of him and Keegan sharing a frosty relationship since the United manager’s days as national coach has strengthened suspicions that Owen – whose current contract expires next summer – is unsettled. But Keegan is ready to rubbish claims that he would be happy to let Owen leave by starting discussions over a new deal. “We have to sit down with Michael. It’s something we need to discuss and we will have talks before the end of the season,” said the Newcastle boss. “It goes without saying that I want him to stay. I don’t want to lose him.” Keegan added: “Newcastle fans have not seen enough of him to realise how good he is. He has never had a run of games. “The first stage is getting the games under his belt, but I’d like to think I can bring the best out of him. “I hope the club, the fans, the players, myself can bring the best out of him. “If we can get the best out of Michael Owen, we have got one of the best players in the world. If he can stay fit and if we get some creativity in midfield in the summer (two very big ifs) he can still be effective. He's only 28. But if we can negotiate a more sensible salary (can't see anywhere matching anything like what he's on now - even factoring in a Bosman / signing-on fee) he's worth having around. He isn't worth building the team around getting the best out of him though, a trap we fell into with Shearer near the end of his career I feel. The way he stuck three of his four chances away against Boro, and the majority of others away is vital to us when we're creating so few chances. The way he fashioned that late chance at Villa as well was quality. If we get a few more decent players around him in the summer he'll start scoring for fun. Aye, but you've got to balance wages against what we'd get for him (assuming he doesn't just let his contract run out), which is about £100 if people are to be believed, and also what it would cost to sign another striker in fee and wages. I still think (for several reasons) it'll be hard for us to get much better than a fit Owen (yeah I know) that is in a team that actually plays to his strengths..... or just a team that plays even. sammynb 3640 Posted February 10, 2008 Share Posted February 10, 2008 I doubt he will sign a new contract on reduced wages, I doubt he's worth what he is on, I doubt any other club would pay him what we pay him, I doubt he will stay fit/uninjured for any period of time, I doubt he will be here once his contract runs out, I doubt Sven will be concerned when they pay him a huge sign on fee and lower wages than Newcastle will offer him, I doubt it will really make any difference to either clubs.
