What's the difference??

I recorded a dvd from vhs yesterday onto -RW.

It will play on the recorder but not on this pc or a dvd player in a different room. I did a test onto a +RW disc which played on the dvd recorder and this pc yet not on the dvd player in the other room !!

Can anyone explain this ??

So you're using rewritable disks me old chum.

Go for just the -r as they are obviously a lot cheaper than rewritable ones.

DVD-R is probably the most compatible format though Snakey so stick with it.

Also what speed were you burning at?

Sorry - I gave you bum information!! I'm using -R not RW's.

Speed???? Are you havin' a laugh???? :D I'm playing the tape whilst recording it. ;)

its a "format" thing. The - types are more universally compatible, or so I was told. So I've stuck to - types for both DVD on the PC and DVD recorder under the telly, and they have all copied and worked on 2 different DVD players and the PC

The plot thickens. The -R dvd I recorded onto yesterday will not play on either of my kids' laptops either.

I'm totally lost on this one. I may just put it all on RW's as they seem to work wherever (I use these for recording progs to take away with me) I try them without problem.

Basically you have + discs and - discs and then you have - and + players and those that play both. If I get a DVD that say my DVD player wont play I usually find the PS3 will. It may be that you need some +R blanks or a different brand. Its very unusual, but I bought some software about 2 month ago that by laptop was saying the disc was blank but my desktop was fine with it. I had to copy the disc and it worked fine.

Cheers for that, JawD.

Could also be that you're not finalising the disc after you've finished recording.

Care to explain that one?? Please.

Put your recorded disc back in your player (the one you used to record it), then look for a 'Finalise Disc' option somewhere - possibly under disc tools or something similar.

Once you've finalised the disc though you won't be able to record anymore onto it.

Okay, I'll give that a go. Cheers.
