David Kelly 1280
Only two premier league teams other than the top four in the 5th round and one of them is the smoggies so the only team that have any hope at all of breaking the top 4's monopoly on this trophy are Portsmouth! It might be a bit interesting for the lower level teams just getting this far but it basically amounts to the fact that the FA Cup is boring as hell these days and there are no prospects at all of getting smaller clubs winning anything anymore. Can someone tell me how often a team outside the top half of the top league have EVER won the FA cup? Generally any upsets that occur are in the earlier rounds, no? I might be way off, but I thought it's only ever been once in a blue moon that a lower team might go all the way.

It used to more common that a team lower down in the league would win it now and again though. Now it's always one of the 'big four' whereas if you go back to before the Premier League it was won by teams like Wimbledon and Coventry - who both had decent sides but now the gap between those four and the rest seems massive and you have to go back over ten years for one of those lot not winning it. luckyluke 2
Everton were the last team other than the CURRENT big four to win it, but when Chelsea won it in 1997 and 2000 they were hardly a giant. Leeds and ourselves were on a level pegging with them around that time, and IIRC the 2000 final against Villa was hardly one sided. More's the pity considering our performance against Chelsea in the semis that year. West Ham were the better side for much of the 2006 final as well. It's still possible. The year Wimbledon won it is the first match I remember watching, so I haven't really got a clue what it was like up to then. Obviously I know there were a few shocks like the Mackems and Southampton (in addittion to those you list), but did lower league teams often go through to the later rounds in larger numbers? I've always enjoyed the FA Cup for the shocks of the first few rounds, and it hasn't really changed to me noticeably while I've watched football. Everton also finished bottom half when they won it, as Luke alludes to. West Ham were the last team to win it outside the top flight (1980 iirc) but I can't remember that match. I can remember QPR getting to the final and forcing a replay, as did Brighton against Man Utd (Brighton were top flight but relegated). Obviously in recent time you have Millwall making it but they never looked like creating a shock. I know what you're saying in that it's usually dominated by the top sides but that has become a monopoly in recent years for the top four - since the mid 90's in fact. Before then you always got a few Cup Finals in each decade where lesser teams caused shocks and won it.

You always used to feel a non-top 4 club could win it (in fact up until not so long ago there wasn't really a top 4 like there is now), even if they didn't in the end. These days it's more like they should just let ManU, Chelski, Arse and Liverpool in at the semi's or something. No wonder people are more "meh" about it. luckyluke 2
Even more annoying as DK says that even the teams who you could expect to give one of the big four a game - Spurs, Man City, Villa, Everton - have all been knocked out. With the exception of Spurs playing Man Utd, I think I was hoping the other 'underdog' team these lot were playing - which has now resulted in almost certain victory for Man Utd, Arsenal, or Chelsea. D'oh!
