paddy 17
OBAFEMI MARTINS has been offered a bank-busting £26million deal to sign up for Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle revolution until 2013. The Nigerian striker, 23, still has 3½ years of his current deal to run but is wanted by Inter Milan, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City. So new Toon boss Keegan has moved to keep hold of the former Inter star. Toon owner Mike Ashley has sanctioned a two-year extension to Martins’ contract and a 50 per cent wage rise to £90,000-a-week. As part of the deal Martins has agreed to forfeit a £13m release clause. He said: “These are exciting times and I want to stay.” Martins’ contract is being negotiated by Chris Nathaniel of NVA management, whose clients include Rio Ferdinand and Micah Richards. He also arranged the £1m deal for John Terry’s autobiography. Steven Taylor is also ready to sign a new deal after rejecting a five-year contract in September. Gemmill 47135
What a disgusting waste of money. If we're gonna pay that muppet £90k a week, we're fucked.

East Stander 0
What a waste of money for a centre forward with worse control than Frank Pingel and whose reputation is "dining out" on that Spurs goal, imo.
David Kelly 1280
Definitely not worth that sort of money. I would rather we left the release clause in because I certainly wouldn't be averse to letting him go for £13m. I do think we will see more from him under Keegan than Allardyce but I still don't think he has the skills of a striker worth that kind of money. JawD 99
Strange if true. Id like to see what Martins is like under KK. Hopefully a hell of alot better. I do get the idea that Martins is a confidence player and KK may help him a fair bit. He has a shit load of improving to do. Worth 90k per week? Hell no, but then I dont think any player is. A more open style of play should help Martins out. This plus Keegan's man-management skills should get the best out of him and his brittle confidence. Big TRon 0
I don't think it was necessary to give him a bigger contract, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing him in a Keegan team.
paddy 17
for christ sake he has 3 1/2 years left, why not leave it till the end of the season and look at the situation then
NJS 4446
(Assuming shred of truth) Instead of just giving him a shit load of money it should be linked to targets - learn to trap a ball = £5k a week rise, learn to pass the ball 5 yards another £5k, 20 yards = £10k, do the last 2 to a team mate another £10k etc, etc. £90k for unrealised potential is stupid. ewerk 31597
Bollocks imo. I'd say we're far more interested in getting new faces in at the moment rather than renegotiating contracts of current players plus it would seem very strange for us to be offering a new contract to a player I'm assuming Keegan hasn't even met yet. Who is also away at the ACN and therefore, whom he won't have had a chance to see in training. That said the papers have been spot on about the likes of Bridge, Woodgate and Shorey arriving.
