Blackburn chairman John Williams has insisted that David Bentley will not be leaving the club.

Bentley has been in fine form this season and reports have suggested that Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan is interested in signing the midfielder.

However, Williams maintains that he has not yet been contacted by Newcastle and has quashed talk of a sale.

He has also revealed that discussions over a new deal for Bentley are moving ahead smoothly.

"Our position is clear, David Bentley is not for sale," Williams told the Lancashire Telegraph.

"We've not heard anything from Newcastle or anyone else and we wouldn't welcome any interest.

"We stated recently that we wanted to sit down with David and his agent to discuss a new deal.

"He only signed a new contract in the recent past but we felt that his performances this season were such that it warranted us to sit down with him and discuss a new contract and talks are progressing well."

The thing is a club saying a player not leaving doesn't mean a fucking thing these days.

Exactly, should the player decide they want to go there isn't much the club can do, though from Blackburn to us is a bit of a side step for him at the moment.

Not financially.

Aye but a side step with a staircase in front of it at least.

Blackburn is more of a small pantry with 60's interior design.

I think a big-money move would go to Bentley's thick, chav head, and for this reason I hope we don't sign him.

what the hell are you going on about?

I haven't a clue. I must say Bentley is one player I'd like to see at Newcastle.

I was reading a massive interview with Bently the other day, and while coming across as a bit of a dunce and all round wacko, it sounded like 'if you come here you can have loads of fun playing regular football' would appeal to him.

It may just be my dislike for Bentley talking, but I think he'd be a flop.

I agree, I think he's a bit over-rated. He's no quicker than Milner, and less good at dribbling. The end product is better though, but he's not a Champions league signing.

I'm just a bit concerned about the lack of pace for some of our supposed transfer targets. Ashton and Bentley are ok in their own right, but I think we need an injection of pace in both those areas. In any case I think we should be aiming higher.

These Ashton/Richards/Bentley stories are just covers of what the real targets are. Come Thursday/Friday and all of a sudden BAM!!! NEWCASTLE SIGN SUCH AND SUCH. Or, in the case of the southern press: SMALL DELUSIONAL CLUB SIGN TOP PLAYER, WHO HAS MADE A BIG MISTAKE GOING THERE.

what a load of old cock i'm reading.

Bentleys a far better individual than milner or Nzogbia or duff. he's also a better team player and scores more goals and creates more chances. technically whilst he doesn't have the outright dribbling skills of milner, or the pace of nzogbia he has better basic technique. Duff for me has had his day and long term is not an option.

if we can afford him he's worth getting in as he is far better out wide than any of our 3 wingers.

Baggio mooted the possibility of him playing in the middle in the long-run (over on N-O iirc) and I think he would possibly be a really top player there. In the meantime he'd be a better right-winger than we have at the club.

Bentley's loving life at Ewood

David Bentley is loving life at Ewood Park and is ready to extend his contract as he feels Mark Hughes has taken Blackburn "to the next level".

The England international only signed an improved deal just over a year ago, but is now reported to be in discussions to commit his future further.

Bentley has produced a series of sparkling displays for Rovers in the Premier League this season and is now pushing to become a regular on the right flank for his country.

He told Sky Sports News: "I love playing for the manager, I love playing with all the lads that are there and I love the club. It's really enjoyable.

"I'm enjoying my time at Blackburn. You just take each game as it comes because the 90 minutes in football changes everything."

Bentley believes that the future for England is bright under new coach Fabio Capello, with the 2010 World Cup a realistic target.

He added: "He's (Capello) got such a talented bunch of lads.

"If he can get us playing well and with that freedom, with the top players expressing themselves, I believe we can win the World Cup."

Bentley was delighted to see Mark Hughes remain at Ewood Park, after speculation linking him with the Newcastle vacancy which was eventually filled by Kevin Keegan.

He said: "He's a top manager, he's taken Blackburn to the next level so he's always going to be linked with jobs.

"He's doing a great job with Blackburn."
