Captain Owen

I know there's a lot of ill feeling towards the bloke, but like Keegan said about Barton "He's a Newcastle player so he has my full support".

It annoys me that when Owen scores there's a retisence about chanting his name.

I hope this is Keegans first masterstroke in winning over Owen and winning the fans over to him too.

Given the players that are missing due to African cup of Nations and suspensions, I think it makes sense to give the armband to Owen, also its an olivebranch following the comments taken from Owens book, a good move in my opinion.

Agree completely.

As Jimbo said it is a good idea as an olive branch but he's not my idea of a captain though we are very short on options, I'd like to see him bring someone else in with real leadership qualities in the transfer window or in the summer.

Agree, probably a good bit of psychology. I don't like strikers as captains though.

Agree with what's been said, good decision by Keegan as it shows he has no axe to grind with Owen and that they can work together and we didn;t really have many candidates left to choose as captain. But down the line you'd maybe expect a midfielder or defender to take over, though this is Keegan who wouldn't likely mind a striker being captain!

Well Pedro was his captain last time.

King Kev: Owen To Keep Toon Armband

By Craig Hope

KEVIN Keegan says that Michael Owen will keep the black and white armband for the foreseeable future as long as he is happy to do so.

The 28-year-old hitman was handed the captaincy by Keegan before Saturday's goalles draw against Bolton.

It was a move which certainly killed off any suggestion of a rift between the manager and striker with Owen declaring on Sunday that he is desperate to be part of KK's Tyneside revolution.

And that would've been music to the ears of the Geordie Messiah after deciding to make the club's record signing his on-the-pitch leader.

"I looked at the players I had got, and I honestly believed Michael was the most experienced player on the pitch, along with Shay," explained the 56-year-old gaffer.

"I told Shay I would like Michael to lead it from the front, and he said 'Fine - I fully understand. I've got no problems with that'.

"I think we'll leave it with him at the moment, and if he comes to me and says he enjoys it, then we can look at it longer term."

i wonder then whether keegans ees a place in the side for martins. he's already talked highly of viduka and made owen his captain. owen will start every game if he's captain; no mention of oba as of yet plus he's hardly the best partner for owen

let's hope he has a cracking african nations tournament then! If nothing else it will increase his value if he isnt going to stay

I reckon Yoda could be KK's type of player, irrelevant of what Big Red says

You know I don't really rate him but he is a confidence player in a big way and if anyone can motivate players it's Keegan.
