i'm gonna have to do one between now and FEB 2006. Can't imagine how... but it'll have to be done.

At least I know what my subject will be: Regeneration in the North East.

And knowing what I'm like it'll probably be a last minute job.

Whilst i am toying over a couple of ideas of what i shall be doing my dissertation on this year i was wondering who on here has had the joy of doing a dissertation?  What "exciting" topic did you do it on?  Did you work on it for the year or was it a last minute job?

Well, I am in the closing stages of my doctorate. My dissertation had the really exciting topic of "legal actions of dispossessed monasteries at the Imperial chamber court in the early 16th century". ;)

The dissertation is the only bit I have left to do of my B.Sc. but I'm procrastinating like ferk over it. Because it's a nursing degree and specialising in Critical Care it'll probably be something very boring like The Prolonged Use of Mechanical Ventilation on the Unconscious Patient, or something equally as thrilling.

Could be worse Cath considering some of the jobs nurses are required to do! ;)

I can't remember the exact title of my dissertation off the top of my head, but it was basically about online virtual tours set up by museums. Did the research at the end of my 2nd year, then did nowt, then a week of choosing the websites and evaluating them, then I wrote it in 4 days....the 4 days leading up to it being handed in. ;)

You can't really write a 10,000 word dissertation on cleaning up poo though really. Thankfully it's not something I have to do often in my current job. Gone are the days when this nurse mops brows and cleans up shit - I do the slighly more technical side of nursing now.

whatever it is start writing NOW  - most people wander along and then realise they have a week to pull it all together  = PANIC!!!

I did the last week PANIC and ended up with a indvidual mark of 'first' for my dissertation! ;)

Some people work better under pressure!

In your experience perhaps....

In mine, the successful lot seem to be those who leave it to the last minute.

I'll go with that... you learn a lot about your future working habits at uni really. Whenever I tried to do anything well before the deadline, the quality just wasn't up to scratch, and that still applies now in my shadowy life as a transamalator - I can't work properly without the adrenaline rush of time pressure and the threat of horrendous failure hanging over my head.

OK I win on this one.

My degree ( at the esteemed LSE) was "Group and Interpersonal Psychology" and my thesis was titled "Football Hooliganism - Ritual Rhetoric or Reality"

Uilising a methodology of interview and observation, or going to the match and talking to my mates as it was otherwise known, I managed to spend a year studying football crowds. Marvellous.

same here really ... I know myself too well now, and know that even if I think about doing it as soon as possible, it'll still be there waiting to be done 2 days before the deadline...

Agree. Work better as deadline looms.

I'm just starting my second year now, but I'm already beginning to think about it. Hopefully this year should make things a bit clearer.

I'm hoping to know/decide what I'm going to do it on by the summer and start work on it then.
