Barton heads back to his native Merseyside tomorrow, hoping his personal apology to Keegan earns him the chance to make amends for his disgraceful behaviour at City’s Christmas party last week by helping his team to victory over his boyhood idols Everton. It would start the former England Under-21 star’s long road to rehabilitation following the cigar-burning antics which will cost him up to six weeks’ wages and dragged City’s good name through the mud. Providing Barton listens to the good advice being offered, Keegan is confident the player can mature enough to be a major influence on the City side for years to come and enhance his status as a crowd favourite. After watching Dunne battle back from well-publicised alcohol problems to become one of the key figures in the current City squad, Keegan reckons Barton does not have too far to look for a role model. “I have told Joey it is not much more than a year since Richard was in a far worse situation, and look at him now,” said Keegan. “He has turned his life around in much more difficult circumstances; everyone is pulling for him, and he is playing really well. “It would be fair to say that 18 months ago Richard didn’t have the respect of anyone at this football club. Now he has the respect of everyone. “I do not believe Joey has the problems Richard did. But if he wants a role model there is one, and he could do worse than ask a few questions and start listening to a few things.” Keegan offered some more personal advice during an emotional chat with Barton, and the 22-year-old left his manager in no doubt how much he regretted the events of Sunday evening when he shoved a lighted cigar into the eye of young team-mate Jamie Tandy. The City boss has some sympathy for player thrust into the limelight at a young age – although the manager is in no doubt that the record club fine is totally justified. Keegan was 23 when he was sent off at Wembley in 1974 following a confrontation with Billy Bremner – and as a player and manager, he has spent his whole life under intense scrutiny. He is not prepared to make too many allowances, though, and said: “I think we have sent out the right message this week, not just for Manchester City but for the whole of football. “We will not put up with a lack of discipline. “We all realise stakes are high in the game, but players get well paid for what they do and they have to accept the responsibility that comes with it. If they don’t they will be severely punished. “We all make mistakes. I learned the hard way by getting sent off at Wembley - and I am sure there will be players who have done a lot worse things than Joey and managed to get away with it. “But he has to recognise he can’t just do the first thing that comes into his head all the time. “When people annoy you you bite your tongue. You can’t react; you have to look at the bigger picture.” Keegan acknowledges nonetheless young players like Barton have to learn to cope with their fame. “It’s not easy for young players to live up to the fact they are role models,” he said. “But the alternative is never to be in a situation where people look up to you and admire you and never have the chance to earn the kind of money on offer if you do things correctly. “I am not going to preach to Joey. I can only give him the benefit of my experience. “All I know is he is a hell of a football player and he will get better. “With a bit more experience and an older head on him, he could be a terrific asset for this football club. “That is what I want – and after sitting in a room with him and having a chat, I know that is what he wants too.” Despite the praise and his match-winner against Bolton last Saturday, Barton is still not sure of a starting berth at Goodison Park as Keegan ponders a possible reshuffle which would see Shaun Wright-Phillips move into a more central position – with Willo Flood restored on the right flank. “It seems like a year since Joey scored at Bolton; yet it is only a week,” reflected Keegan. “He is in my squad, which on his performances is the least he deserves. Said KK is an unreal motivator, poor not the best coach, but will get qulity in to do that for him Expects Shearer to join. Will immediately start playing/signing wingers.
