@yourservice 67
Sky Sports News understands that 'informal discussions' have taken place regarding Gerard Houllier taking the Newcastle United job. The former Liverpool manager has emerged as a leading contender to replace Sam Allardyce after Harry Redknapp opted to stay at Portsmouth. Houllier is currently working as the French Football Federation's technical director, but the organisation's president Jean-Pierre Escalette would not block a move to Newcastle. Escalette admitted he was 'not surprised' that Houllier receives offers, although there has been no firm proposal from the Magpies. According to Sky Sports News, business associates of owner Mike Ashley have held 'informal discussions' with Houllier's representatives. Opportunity Houllier would now 'welcome' the opportunity to discuss the vacant position with Ashley and Newcastle chairman Chris Mort. Reports also suggest the ex-France national team coach would be willing to work alongside Alan Shearer at St James' Park. A 'dream ticket' of Shearer and former boss Kevin Keegan has been mooted, but Houllier could now be an option to groom the Toon legend for the managerial hot seat. Newcastle have not commented on the latest reports, but are understood to have spoken to representatives of several candidates. SkyBet have now made the Frenchman favourite to take over at Newcastle and have cut his odds to 3-1. Keegan is second favourite at 4-1 while Shearer is 7-1 alongside Harry Redknapp.

JawD 99
Me also. A questionable transfer history but if we attained half what he did with Liverpool at that cost Id take it right now.

We could do a lot worse that that. seems like a laughable waste of time to me, how's his heart gonna cope with the pressure he's gonna have heaped upon him after we lose a couple of games? NJS 4446
Since the club has said they have spoken to candidates and/or their representatives and will continue to do so, how is this news? Why are they obsessed with narrowing in on one person?
Dr Gloom 22535
Il support Le` Houllier like. We could do a lot worse that that. agreed - we could do much worse. even better if he gets shearer on board as his number two because then the fans will get behind them both and hopefully give them time to do the job. although the latest stories seem to imply that shearer would only take the top job so that idea might be non-starter
khay 10
Think he will do a good job, but think both parties would see it as only a postion for a couple of years.

@yourservice 67
From 2004 Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has revealed the excessive pressure surrounding both himself and the club in recent weeks was behind his exit. Liverpool qualified for the Champions League but the club have been searching for funds to boost their title hopes. Houllier said: "The reason why we have come to this decision is the sudden excessive pressure on the board and me. "I thought it would be harmful for the players for the next season and it could jeopardise their performance." Houllier added: "I have always said the club comes first. I'm not here for myself, I'm just here for the club. The club always comes first for me. "Liverpool meant six years of happiness of me. The team and I have had a great relationship. "The club has considerably improved on and off the field. It must keep on developing." But Houllier also issued a veiled warning to the Liverpool board to choose carefully any potential future investors. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has emerged as the sole bidder for Liverpool after Steve Morgan withdrew from the running on Friday. "It is important for the club to find a balance in a world driven by economic and financial needs. It needs to consider its roots - it cannot always have a quick fix." The Frenchman was keen to stress his leaving had nothing to do with his health - during his tenure as Liverpool manager he underwent life-saving heart surgery. "As far as I'm concerned I'm in good shape. I still love my football. I'm not retiring and my leaving is in no way health related." Parry paid tribute to Houllier for his work as manager over the last six years. "Gerard changed things off the pitch too, bringing back both our pride and self-respect and instilling discipline and professionalism throughout the club," said the Liverpool chief executive. "Whatever has happened Gerard will always be a friend of the club and welcome at Anfield. "Now we start the search for a new manager - Monday is the end of a chapter and Tuesday the start of another." I've heard that somewhere before

Seriously though, the crowd chanting the number 2's name would undermine the manager quite a bit if you ask me.

manc-mag 1
If Houllier gets a formal interview for this it should be held on the Nemisis at Alton Towers. If his heart packs in we'll have dodged a bullet tbh.
