Newcastle United need strong leadership

I have followed Newcastle United's fortunes since I made my debut for Grimsby against them in 1963 and what a roller-coaster ride it has been, continuing with the dismissal of Sam Allardyce.

Like many others I want someone to get control of them, so that we can see where the club are heading. In his five years as manager Kevin Keegan almost managed it, as did Sir Bobby Robson in his five-year stint.

As Allardyce was not owner Mike Ashley's appointment, the disappointing run of results was always going to leave Allardyce open to losing his job. Now that he has gone what should the club be putting in place?

All of these and many other matters need sorting out before a new appointment is confirmed.

1. It is their responsibility to decide upon the structure of the club and the role they want the manager to play in it. For instance, is the new man going to be allowed to manage all footballing aspects of the club, or is he, as is more likely with billionaire owners, to be more of a head coach, leaving such things as transfer and contract negotiations to others?

2. Will he be allowed to bring his own backroom staff in? We can all see these days how the number of supporting staff has grown. Are they all absolutely necessary? All of this needs clarification before a new man is appointed.

3. The scouting system. Does that belong to the club, as I, to the surprise of some, believe it should, or once again will the new manager be allowed to bring his own people in and therefore take them with him when his time to depart comes? This all means a lack of stability, which is always happening at clubs like Newcastle, who are forever changing their managers.

4. Will the club’s academy director report to the manager, thereby creating a football link between the youth and senior sides of the club, or will the former report to the chairman, the chief executive or a director especially selected for these responsibilities?

5. What length of contract are you likely to offer the new manager? Will you guarantee him at least a minimum of three years, perhaps with an option on the club’s side of a two-year extension with an agreed improved salary, should the team average a position of eighth or higher in the first three years? If you are going to insist upon immediate success, which will mean you will have to back him financially, you could end up with more disappointment, as the expectancy level will eat into everybody. The bag of sweets has been put in front of Newcastle supporters and then snatched away far too often in recent years to go down that road again.

6. All of the previous points are business decisions. So this one should be also. A pact to fully support whoever you choose and then let him get on with the job.

Turnip Heid for the Toon...

Hence my Mort thread. More needs changing than just the manager. Also, Allardyces old number 2 said that his whole scouting team would fuck off with him, so no more cheap foreign spots for a while.

For a while? Which ones did they find for us? If you're talking about the young lads, we have no idea what they'll turn out like.

I've always thought Taylor should be working in club football like.

Watched 'The Impossible Job' documentary again recently.

"LES! Demand it! Perhaps they can't see you"

"It's gotta go, it's gotta go big!"

"Carlton, We're losing the shape! FACKING HELL!"

"I cannot have faces like yours round me Rob."

"Tell your friend the referee he's cost me my job."

Phil Neal repeating the last two words of every sentence he utters. Legendary.

Are you serious? None of his foreign signings were exactly unknowns. Beye was the captain of Marseilles, for example.

I always thought he talked a lot of sense subsequently.

I don't think he was that well known, Rozenhall certainly wasn't, even Cacapa passed some people by. And it's one thing knowing of them, another knowing they would come to NUFC. How many players did Roeder publicly waste his time on finding out they had no interest in this club? There's more to scouting than just spotting talent.
