Shepherd Mk II

As much as I can see "some" improvement in Redknapp over Allardyce, it's hardly the marker that shows we mean business is it?

Do you really think that the big four are shaking in their boots?

Man City and Spurs along with Everton and Villa are all sniffing around the top four and we go and poach a competent but unsuccessful manager. He's won nothing of note.

I like Harry as a character but ffs, it's hardly sending shockwaves through world football.

The gauntlet thrown down by Abramovich was such that Chelsea are now a world wide brand and the years of spending vast sums are paying dividends. Ok, so they've struggled just recently but 2 Premier League titles is nothing to sniff at. Today they signed Anelka for what we paid for Shearer.

If this is what Ashley has in mind we will be very disappointed. No statement of intent to show he means business. Just an average appointment even by Shepherd's standards. I keep trying to be positive but I fear we have another small time guy at the helm who doesn't have the vision to appoint a Wenger or a Benitez.

I'm gutted. If we sign anyone exciting I'll be delighted, but I can't see the world's elite beating a path to the cold and unglamorous north to play for a guy who could have had a career as an extra in Minder.

I dont think anyone should expect Ashley to throw silly money at a manager. Especially not one he appointed or another until they have shown they can make good choices with that kind of money.

As for your title ... just no pleasing some people...

How is this an improvement on Shepherd?

It's just ridiculously underambitious.

Im thinking the overall picture. Ashley has yet to mention his Geordie legions on Sky, yet to be seen in FYEO, yet to promise to carry Owen back to scouseland, yet to buy company cars from sports direct at an inflated price, yet to give a job to a family memeber only for them to spend most time abroad, yet to be seen in greggs, yet to talk on sky like a complete twat. Then on Tuesday ...

As for the not yet happened appointment, maybe I am just more relieved its not McLaren or Hughes than I am glad its (maybe) Harry, and yes I also would have liked to have seen a "bigger" name (foreign) , but I still insist that for one its not to say he didnt ask and get knocked back, and also that we are not the attractive prospect we like to think we are. Of course we are for the likes of Harry, but not for the likes of Jose when he is being touted for Barca / AC etc.

Are we not being overambitious?

Ashley has bought the club at great expense and has every right, in my opinion, to have his own man in charge.

Exactly. Yeah lets slag off a guy who just bought our club and through his own money (which he most probably will not see again) written off a mountain of debt for us. What a prick..

If he's prepared to splash out then he should be prepared to bring in a manager that will not lose his money, judging by the HR rumours he'll be on his way to doing just that

Yeah...but why buy it?

You're not going to break into the top four with Harry Redknapp in charge. So what's the point?

The difference between 13th and 7th in real terms is zero. It only gets interesting if you can break into the top 6. The difference gets bigger the higher you go.

5th/4th Uefa/CL

3rd/2nd Qualify/automatic

2nd/1st Also rans/Champions

There are four reasons to sign for a football club.

1: You think you're going to win something

2: Fat contract

3: Attractive location (London/Barcelona etc)

4: Sentimental/Hometown ties.....

We will NEVER be able to attract players because of our location, so we pay over the odds for the wrong type of player....ie one who's motivated.

You CAN overpay a manager because people start to believe they can win something which is reason numero uno.

Shearer's gone, Shola's shit and Berbatov is not going to touch us with a shitty stick so that's gone.

It's pointless.

I'm far from sure we could get anyone much better than Rednapp (or Allardyce frankly).

We're in a situation where there's a lot of reasons not to come to Newcastle and a lot fewer to come than there once were.

The thing that really needs to happen is Rednapp to get support (from fans and board) and at least get a few years of stability.

Ashley well off, but even Chelski don't spent like Chelski any more (ok Anelka is massively over price, although still nothing like as expensive as Shearer was comparatively, but still).

I suspect the purse strings may loosen a bit more with Rednapp, but I think he'll still be on a fairly tight budget and probably not a "top 4" budget.

But at the moment getting Newcastle back in the right end of the table year in year out is more important than "top 4" really, that and getting some stability.

Having said that if Rednapp is gone this time next year, then yes maybe comparisons could then be drawn with FFS.

Sorry, you're a decent poster, but threads like these are embarrassing.

I'm not!

I mean it though...what's the point.

It's like the guy could have any car in the world but he bought a new Renault. Why bother?

Where's the imagination?

I'll tell you why I'm disappointed. Sven is building something at Man City, plus he has a worldwide reputation that far exceeds Redknapp's. Tottenham can offer London and have a UEFA cup winner in charge.

That puts us 6th and that's not including Villa (owned by a billionaire and run by as good a manger as Redknapp).

So 7th is what we can expect. Roeder got us to 7th FFS!!!

Sorry if this goes against the consensus but I'm really deflated about this. Aiming for 7th? I thought we had more arrogance and confidence than that. Keegan did not give a fuck about reputation or tradition. He took our club by the balls and gave us the best period in the last 50 years. If you get bought out by a guy like Ashley, don't you have the right to want to aim a little higher?

A year is a long time in football....look at the players Sven goes for in the summer and ask yourself how our 5 year plan's working out.

Whether Mourinho would have come or not is a moot point now, but I got the impression he already has a job lined up after turning down England. What concerns me slightly is the players Harry is reported to want to bring if he comes. Defoe, Chimbonda and Campbell are good players and will improve the first team but they aren't top 4 signings. Maybe they are just transfer window buys to get us through to the summer?

I think Harry will do ok tbh. Considering the shite we've had to endure under Allardyce with his 5 year plan to become Bolton Redknapp should be a breath of fresh air. I just hope if he decides against coming we don't fall back on Hughes who seems to me to be a slightly less dour version of Big Sam.
