Redknapp's relatively recent signings.

I think that his recent record has been pretty decent. If you look, a few of the players are those people on these very boards wanted for Newcastle- Campbell, Distin, Lauren, Diop, Nugent. Then you have additional, genuinely exciting signings like Kranjcar and Muntari. I'm sure he's made bad signings for West Ham during six years in charge there, but look at what Robson saddled us with. I think it would be hypocritical for a lot of people to quibble with his most recent work in the transfer market, once he'd been given decent cash.

Not sure if it's lack of ambition, or just that Morshley had their hearts set on Dirty 'Arry right from the start and he was their only target.

He's signed some good players for Pompey, Campbell, Muntari, Bouba Dioup, Distin, Krankjar.

He has signed some crap though, Nugent for £8m(ish) and Dario Silva who only has one leg.

Plenty of people who wanted Nugent at the Toon though, to be fair.

Surely that would epitomise lack of ambition, if they'd even tried to get Van Gaal from AZ or something you'd feel they want the club to be in the upper tier, but to just go direct to Redknapp?

Is that the best they could come up with in their blue sky session?

Don't you ever get bored of being irritatingly positive about mediocre managers?

It's not just about getting good players but getting the balance right throughout the team, something I never had faith in Allardyce doing with the amount of grafters he went after.

He's getting the best out of Diop, Johnson, Kanu and Campbell, four players who were either out of form or on their way down until he worked with them.

The board needs a counterpoint sometimes.

Thank God we can rely on you to provide it.

As for Nugent, the fact that Redknapp spent £8m on him, gave him about two games and then decided he didn't like him after all paints that transfer in a rather bad light. I'll admit that his recent transfer record looks pretty good though.

The nugent situation is like enriques. Except harry can be forgiven as nugent had proved himself in the championship and looked genuinely good. No one had heard of enrique apart from sam, and he still didnt like him!

The misgivings i have about harry are

1- his age. Hes nearly 61. After a 4 year contract is he going to want to retire?

2- his arrest last month. Blatantly as dodgy a dealer as you can get, do we want to bring that to our club

3- just like sam, he refuses to speak to the BBC which means most of us never get to hear his opinions on the games on MOTD!

The problem is not so much what he can (or even cannot) do.

The problem is whether he'll be given the time to actually try.

And another issue is frankly our players, and how they will respond.

It is probably very hard for any manager to stamp his authority on players when realistically the players are likely to be there longer than he is.

We've had a lot of dressing room problems and power-plays and sulks and hissy fits in the last few years and I reckon that is probably at least partially to do with this.

Seeing as how it's Ashley's man he'll be given every opportunity I'd imagine. Unless he does an Allardyce and makes a complete balls up of it.

But Allerdyce hasn't "made a complete balls up of it". Although he's hardly done well, he's still at a level most everyone said was "acceptable" when he was appointed.

Yes maybe Ashley will be more likely to retain his own man, but if the fans are baying for blood (which is to some degree the norm now), then maybe not too.

IMO Allardyce made a complete balls up of it. No one expected him to be challenging for the Chamions League, all he really needed to do was beat the shit sides with the better playes at his disposal. At least some of the time.

Aye, but pointswise he was still there or there about "acceptable". It'd be nice if Rednapp was likely to get us to 6th or 7th this season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us 11th or below at the end of it.

Being sacked for being 11th isn't as bad as the Robson affair, but it's still pretty.... impressive I guess.

considering most of the easy fixtures have been squandered, 11th from here in would be a fair achievement I'd say.

Pointswise it's not that bad, perhaps not the odd utter give away game, but we got some strong home games too and the tough game are pretty much equal with the first half of the season.
