Jimbo 175
Who will be our new scapegoat if Martins is sold ? He's hardly a scapegoat. I'd rather say he has far too many bum boys who turn blind eyes on his mostly poor performances. Along side the contributions of Viduka, Smith and Owen, I struggle to see why Martins should have the distinction of being the striker that gets so much stick, I agree he's been shite lately, but he's been no worse than the others I mentioned but Martins always gets the vitriol. Does he really? Smith does get plenty of stick, as does Owen - especially even at matches while Martins' fan boys rather decide to boo the manager when he is rightly taken off. Presumably the same half-wits who booed the team at the end of the first half against Man City. A small minority though.

Possibly but then you could argue that his critics turn a blind eye to his assets and over-exaggerate his faults. "touch of a rapist", "can't trap a bag of cement" - although as he's no target man, trapping a ball isn't quite as important as it would be for Alan Shearer ot Viduka. True, given the type of player he is it's his movement that's the biggest problem
bawan 0
Some people need to make a decision about whether they like Martins or not, they sit on here all day and slag him of about his first touch and say if a bid came in they would sell him in a flash, but now that teams are actually interested in him they are worried about him leaving, make your fucking minds up man. Craig 6702
That's strange.... there's been plenty of matches this season where I've seen him play through the middle and fluff chance after chance. He's got a fierce shot on him and a decent amount of pace but his composure lets him down. The efforts against West Ham and Arsenal when he went round the keeper and still missed the target are a testament to this. I don't think he's worth anywhere near £10m. He didn't miss the target against Arsenal , it was cleared off the line. West Ham was a bad one I agree. As for Man City on Wednesday, if he had confidence he would have buried them chances. Last season he was the main reason we stayed up, this season he doesn't look half the player he was under Roeder. Thanks, Sam. That doesn't make it better. It was such a timid shot. He placed it when he should've wellied it and vice-versa. Precisely.... Hitting the target in my mind consists of the ball heading towards the back of the net... All the defender needed to do was fart and it changed direction...
Paul 0
I rate Martins. The lad has potential (I know, I know), he's only 22 (allegedly )... if he could sort out his composure infront of goal he'd make a very good player imo, surely this is something that could be worked on?? Ofcourse his confidence probably being rock bottom right now and being played out of position for 50% of games doesn't really help his cause.. Guest Patrokles
Martins is shit. Bellamy was at least 3 times the player, if we're talking about pacy forwards.

Offshore Toon 0
In a side full of confidence he would be a fantastic player, but £10m would be very tempting. I'd probably send them a video of his goal at WHL and wait for them to offer more.
Gemmill 47151
In a side full of confidence he would be a fantastic player Bollocks. He'd just get the opportunity to fuck up a lot more chances. Offshore Toon 0
Well I didn't read what they said, and I doubt I'd care that much. Yes, he'd be "fantastic". The potential is there, the potential doesn't have a first touch, but it's there. And how many players do we have that can make something out of nothing? I struggle to think of many. Charlie, possibly. Maybe Milner. Martins, definently. Edited January 6, 2008 by Offshore Toon
Gemmill 47151
The potential is there, the potential doesn't have a first touch, but it's there. Aye the potential is there......once he learns the fundamentals that should have been in place for years. He can definitely kick the ball though so I don't see why he can't go all the way to the top. I haven't seen Martins create ANYTHING out of nothing in a long time. Other than frustration. He creates a shitload of that.
jaythesouthernmag 0
If we could get anything like £10m for him I woud take any of the following Defoe Bellamy Alves Anelka (I wish) Bent McCarthey Huntelaar He has missed chance after chance, lacks composure and his link play is shite

Well there was that run and cross against City that Viduka was too slow to get to, but that might have been a fluke like most of his goals to be fair. I don't think we'll be able to compete for Huntelaar, same as we are out of the race for Anelka (realistically). Bent and Defoe could be possibilities.
