Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the club have turned down a bid from Newcastle for Wes Brown.

The Magpies lodged a bid for Brown, who is out of contract at the end of the season, as they look to bolster their squad in the January transfer window.

Brown has turned down the offer of a new deal at United, but Ferguson insists the contract remains on the table for the England international.

Ferguson rejected Newcastle's offer for the versatile defender and remains hopeful of keeping him at Old Trafford.

Turned down

"There was an enquiry from Newcastle about Wes and we turned it down," Ferguson told the club's official website.

"The matter rests with Wes and his agent. We'll just wait and see what happens. Our offer is still there - it's now up to Wes."

A new contract with the biggest club in the land or mid-table rugby with Newcastle?

What's he going to do, the suspense is killing!!!!!!!!

He would've signed by now if he wanted to stay there. If they get a CB, they will let him go.

True but I don't think Newcastle is on his escape map, do you?

It's not if they get a cb i dnt think, it's because of gary nev's fitness concerns that alex ferguson isn't letting him go.

Newcastle bid for Brown

Jan 4 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

SAM Allardyce has made his first move in the January transfer market by slapping in a bid for Manchester United’s England defender Wes Brown.

Wes Brown

That was the news coming out of the North West – and sources in Manchester told me today that Allardyce’s bid will have left his big pal Sir Alex Ferguson with a bit of a dilemma.

The Chronicle understands United also have another bid in for a player with an English club.

Big Sam’s interest in the 28-year-old, 14-times capped defender has been known from the moment he arrived from Bolton Wanderers in May and he looked at Brown’s situation in the summer.

But that situation has now changed with Brown, whose contract expires in June, having turned down a new £50,000-a week deal at Old Trafford.

Ferguson has another England international and his skipper Gary Neville still out injured while Johnny Evans looks likely to return to Sunderland on loan.

He has had Danny Simpson playing right-back in some games recently, but I am told that he has not impressed.

Brown, of course, can play at both right-back and as a central defender, and he would be an ideal signing for United in their current situation with both defenders Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye off to the African Nations Cup.

And United must be willing to top Brown’s latest offer from Man U – or why would they make a bid?

While the two high-profile bosses are mates, it remains to be seen whether Ferguson will do Allardyce a favour and sell him Brown.

Ferguson is a big admirer of Rangers right-back Alan Hutton but Spurs have moved in for the Scotland star.

Allardyce, of course, tried to lure Tal Ben Haim to St James’s Park in the close season but lost out to Chelsea and the bright lights of London.

Those lights have not gone out for the Israeli international, but they have certainly been dimmed at Stamford Bridge lately.

However, he is currently in the team, and talk of John Terry being out for the rest of the season has seen Avram Grant pay Lokomotiv Moscow £8m for their Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Allardyce would want to take Ben Haim on loan until the end of the season, but Grant wants £2m for defender, even though he picked him up for nothing in the close season.

United have banked a few quid as they have agreed to sell Matty Pattison to Norwich City.

The South African-born midfielder has been on loan with Glenn Roeder at Carrow Road since the start of the season and was discussing personal terms with the Championship outfit today.

United have agreed a sell-on fee with Roeder and Norwich.

Meanwhile, it looks as though there will be no immediate return to the United team for Joey Barton, even though he has been released from jail.

United have refused to comment on the Barton situation, but it is understood one of the conditions of his bail is he stays in the Sporting Chance clinic in Hampshire.

fair enough, a cb-rb combo would do rather.

He would came here for the money imo, i just hope he wont no better what we have now.

On the other hand its possible he will see out his current contract, get a champions medal, collecting a big sign-on fee in summer, and go to a club like Spurs.

Would be a good move, iv always rated the lad...hes got a nice touch too.

I wonder how much we bid initially or even if it was just an enquiry? I personally think we go back to them with 3-4 mil we will get him....from a business sence and with the glazier there....4 mil now or nothing in 6 months would sound attractive!

Transfer Talk: Sam On Brown/Ben Haim Latest

By Craig Hope

SAM Allardyce says that he would love to bring Wes Brown to Newcastle United but admits that may not be possible during the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old Man Utd defender is out of contract at Old Trafford this summer and has so far rejected the offer of a new deal from the Red Devils.

And Big Sam had this to say when asked by Newcastle World TV if he would be interested in bringing the England international to Tyneside.

"If we could get Wes Brown that would be great but I'm not so sure that in this window we can.

"But I'll speak with the Chairman and we'll just have to wait and see what happens."

And when pressed on reports linking the Magpies with a move for Chelsea defender Tal Ben-Haim, he added: "I don't think so.
